Oakland Tops Women's Soccer, 3-2, In Offensive Battle

ROCHESTER, Mich. - In an evenly-matched offensive battle that featured 33 shots and five goals, the UMass women's soccer team came up short at Oakland, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at OU Soccer Field. The loss leaves the Minutewomen at 3-4-0 on the year, while the Golden Grizzlies improve their record to 3-4-1.
Oakland jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an early goal, 8:50 into the match. Dani Haelewyn's strike from 20 yards out found the back of the net off a pass from Julianne Boyle.
Junior Lindsey DiOrio nearly came through with the equalizer for the Minutewomen in the 14th minute, but her long-range attempt nicked off the crossbar. Her classmate, Deanna Colarossi, later put UMass on the board 26:26 into the contest, leveling the score at 1-1. Colarossi knocked in a rebound in front following a shot headed by freshman Brittany Moore.
Just over five minutes into the second half, the Golden Grizzles climbed back on top. Shannon Doyle sent a through ball to Sarah Lynch who finished the play for her fourth of the season at 51:31.
Senior Therese Smith, who hit the post late in the first half, brought the Minutewomen level with Oakland for a second time in the match, 2-2. On a goal kick by sophomore Emily Cota, freshman Jen Houtmann headed the ball forward to Smith for a shot in along the ground in the 68th minute.
However with the clock winding down, Nicole DeLuca collected a pass from Lynch and curled a shot into the top right corner of the net from 20 yards out at 82:45 for the would-be game winner for the Golden Grizzles.
Oakland finished the match with a slight edge in shots, 17-16, while UMass led in corner kicks, 7-5. Fouls were 13-8 against the Minutewomen.
Cota registered three saves in net for UMass, while Shannon Coley turned aside six shots for the Golden Grizzlies.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 23, closing out their stretch of four straight road games with a match at Brown at 4:30 p.m.
