PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite coming from behind to tie the score twice in the first half, the UMass women's soccer team fell at Brown, 3-2, on a goal in the 88th minute. The setback leaves the Minutewomen at 3-5-0 on the year, while the Bears improve to 4-2-1.
At the 18:45 mark, Brown took a 1-0 lead on a free kick by Mika Sigelman. From 35 yards out, Sigelman sent a strike into the wind that found its way into the top right corner of the net.
Less than three minutes later at the 21:20 mark, senior Therese Smith leveled the score for UMass. Off a centering feed from Ashley Hamel, Smith collected the ball and knocked in a low shot off the fingers of Bears' goalkeeper Amber Bledsoe from nine yards out.
Brown answered in the 27th minute, retaking the lead, 2-1. Maddie Wiener's service into the box off a corner kick set up a one-timer by Gina Walker, who notched her third goal of the season.
Then, with just over five minutes to play in the first half, Smith netted the equalizer for the Minutewomen once again. After junior Deanna Colarossi won the ball in the left-hand corner, she sent a centering pass to Hamel, who touched it over to Smith for her second tally of the game at 39:13.
After some near misses in the second half, including a save by sophomore Emily Cota on a breakaway by Marybeth Lesbirel in the 73rd minute to keep the score even, Lesbriel came through with the game winner for the Bears at 87:48. Off a feed from Allison Kagawa, Lesbriel ripped a shot from 30 yards out that bent under the crossbar.
Brown finished with a slight edge in shots, 16-13, and led in corner kicks, 6-0. Fouls were 8-1 against UMass.
Cota played all 90 minutes in net for the Minutewomen and registered five saves, while Bledsoe and MC Barrett split time in goal for Brown and recorded totals of two and three saves, respectively.
UMass will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 26, as the squad will play host to Harvard in its final match before beginning Atlantic 10 play. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. on Rudd Field.
