5-0 Setback For Women's Soccer At Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The UMass women's soccer team opened up its weekend road trip on Friday evening, falling 5-0 to Michigan at U-M Soccer Stadium. With the setback, the Minutewomen's record levels at 3-3-0, while the Wolverines improve to 4-1-2 on the year.
Sophomore Emily Cota came up with a pair of clutch saves early, but Michigan finally cracked the UMass defense in the 35th minute. Off a throw in by Amanda Bowery, Nkem Ezurike collected the ball and blasted a shot from 20 yards out and into the far right-hand side of the net.
Just under two minutes later, Ezurike sent a lead pass to Kayla Mannino who found her way past the Minutewomen's back line for a breakaway. Mannino's shot along the ground the ground snuck inside the far post at 36:43.
UMass' best chance to score came in the 57th minute. Senior Therese Smith controlled the ball just inside the 18-yard box, but her high, hard shot missed by mere inches, hitting off the crossbar.
The Wolverines then put the game out of reach as Ezurike notched her second of the game at 62:33. After a steal at midfield, Meghan Toohey sent a pass forward for Ezurike who converted her shot attempt from the top of the 18-yard box.
Moments later at 64:50, Tori McComb pushed the score to 4-0 as she followed her own rebound and sent the ball home before it could hit off the right post.
Courtney Mercier then capped off the scoring in the 87th minute as she headed in a ball flicked into the box by Bowery off a corner kick by Shelby Chambers-Garcia.
Michigan finished with a 20-4 advantage in shot attempts and 5-1 in corner kicks. UMass' two shots on goal were produced by junior Meghan Collins and freshman Lauren Skesavage, both turned aside by Haley Kopmeyer. Cota had six saves in net for the Minutewomen. Fouls were 13-12, against UMass.
UMass will conclude its weekend with Sunday match at Oakland on Sept. 19 at 1 p.m.
