Women's Lax Falls 14-4 At No. 1 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 1 Maryland jumped out to a 7-0 start and never looked back as the Terps defeated the UMass women's lacrosse team 14-4 on Saturday at Ludwig Field. UMass senior Merritt Cosgrove led the Minutewomen with two goals as she started her 73rd career game which is a new program record.
UMass will play the winner of Sunday's Stanford/Denver Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship game in next weekend's NCAA Play-In Game. That game will be hosted by the winner of the MPSF championship.
In Saturday's meeting with the Terps, Maryland (17-1) held UMass to just one first half goal while jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of play.
Jesse O'Donnell put UMass on the board with 8:52 remaining in the first half to make it 7-1 at the intermission.
In the second half, Maryland tacked on four more goals before Danielle Pelletier scored an unassisted goal to make it 11-2 with 17:06 remaining in the game.
The Terps scored another three goals in nearly three minutes to push the score to 14-2 with 13:47 left before Cosgrove closed the scoring with both her goals in the final 11 minutes.
Maryland held a commanding 29-to-13 shot advantage but draw controls were even at 10. The Terps forced UMass into 17 turnovers while committing just 10.
Brittany Dipper earned the win in goal for the Terps allowing just one goal while making five saves in the first half. Mary Jordan and Kasey Howard split time between the pipes in the second half.
Katie Florence took the loss for UMass making seven saves in nearly 53 minutes of action before being relieved by freshman Christina Fey (1 save, 0 GA).
Nine different Maryland players scored goals in the game. Sarah Mollison led all players with four points (two goals, two assists). Four other Terps scored two goals in the game to lead Maryland.
The four goals scored by UMass marked a season low as were the 13 shots taken. Saturday's game marked the second time this season that UMass faced a No. 1 ranked team (L, 6-18 vs. Northwestern on Feb. 6).
