AMHERST, Mass. - For the second consecutive week, UMass women's lacrosse sophomore goalie Katie Florence has been named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week announced on Monday. Florence led UMass to its third straight win last Saturday, 16-7, at Temple to remain perfect in league play.
This also marks the third time this season she has won the award.
The Norfolk, Mass., native earned the win against the Owls, UMass' lone game of the week, allowing just seven goals while making six saves, picking up three groundballs and causing one turnover.
It was the third straight game where Florence allowed fewer than 10 goals in a game and the eighth time this season.
After Temple had made it a three goal game with 23 minutes left in the game, Florence allowed just one more goal making three saves on six shots, causing a turnover and picking up a groundball sparking the UMass defense.
For the season, she is posting a career-best goals-against-average of 9.76 and a .422 save percentage in 12 starts. She is also second on the team in groundballs (15) and fifth in caused turnovers (6).
The win on Saturday improves Florence to 17-14 overall for her career improving her GAA to 10.79 and her save percentage to .449 in 31 games. She has 270 career saves playing 1,846 minutes.
Florence earned her first Defensive Player of the Week honor on Feb. 23 after a pair of wins against Holy Cross and UConn. Last week, she was named the league's top defensive player after helping UMass to wins at George Washington and Richmond.
As a freshman in 2009, she was twice named the league's Rookie of the Week and earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team at the conclusion of the season.
The Minutewomen will return to action this Friday at Duquesne in Pittsburgh (1 PM) before returning home after a six-game road stand to face St. Bonaventure at McGuirk Stadium on Sunday (Noon).
