AMHERST, Mass. - UMass senior guard Kim Benton has been selected as one of 80 candidates participating in the eighth annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association's So You Want To Be A Coach program, the WBCA announced on Monday. The two-and-a-half day workshop will be held April 2-4 in conjunction with the WBCA National Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
The program was created to increase the amount of women in the coaching profession and the workshop is based on helping those interested in the coaching field with educational and professional principles. Benton, who will graduate this May with a degree in Sociology, will be one of seven student-athletes from Atlantic 10 teams in attendance. All participants will be provided the opportunity to meet and learn from professional coaches.
The invitees are selected based on their academics, contributions to women's basketball on and off the court, professional resume, an exhaustion of their basketball career at a four-year institution, as well as a nomination and recommendation from their head coach.
A co-captain for the 2009-10 Minutewomen squad, Benton has appeared in all 27 games this season, starting 26, and plays an average of 29.5 minutes per-game. The point-guard has posted career highs in assists (77) and rebounds (67) this season and is averaging 3.8 points-per game. In the season opener, Benton tied her career high putting up 18 points in an overtime victory against Boston University. She also posted a personal best with seven assists against Harvard on Jan. 6.
Benton currently ranks fourth all-time in program history with 124 career three pointers. In the 2006-2007 season, Benton made 50 treys, which ranks fifth in the UMass record book. She has played in every game thus far in her career, 116 contests, tying her for fourth in program annals.
