Swimming And Diving Split At Binghamton

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass swimming and diving teams took a split this weekend against the Binghamton University Bearcats. The men won be a score of 162-157 while the women were just edged out, falling 160-159.
Russ Yarworth's men were once again led by freshman Derek Hursch.
The Rochelle Park, N.J. native who is coming off being named Atlantic 10 Co-Performer of the Week was able to pick up where he left off by sweeping his individual events. He notched victories in the 100 free (47.32), the 200 free (1:41.95), and the 200 IM (1:54.88) while also helping the 500 free relay team of Peter Sacco, Trevor Ziegler and Joey Sbordon to a second place finish (4:08.30).
Sbordon was another Minuteman to have a good day in the pool. He picked up the first-place finish in the 1650 free (16:26.55), while claiming second in the 500 free (4:42.07) and third in the 200 free (1:43.27).
Other individual victories for the men were Ziegler in the 50 free (21.70) and Michael DiMarco in the 200 breast (2:13.65).
On the diving board the trio of Jason Cook, John Clark and Adam Duffield took the top three spots in both the one-meter and the three-meter dives. Cook took the top spot in the one-meter dive with a score of 286.13 followed by Clark in second (256.05) and Duffield in third (255.30). The trio finished in that same order in the three-meter dive with Cook putting up a score of 353.18, Clark a score of 291.15 and Duffield a 263.63.
Bob Newcomb's women were in a battle until the final event. The Minutewomen needed a first place finish in the 500 free relay in order to claim victory but they fell just short taking second and third, with Binghamton claiming the first and fourth spots to seal the victory.
The breaststroke was the strength for the women during the day. In the 100, senior Jessica Starosielec led the way posting a time of 1:07.48. She was followed by Ingrid Woelfel in second (1:09.28), and Tavis Potter in third (1:09.58). In the 200 breast Woelfel placed first with a time of 2:27.14 followed closely by Meghan Nowak in second (2:29.19) and Starosielec in fourth (2:29.45).
Other individual wins for the women were Sarah Kanellas in the 100 fly (59.87) and Chelsea Downing in the 1650 free (18:04.24).
In diving, Molly Elkins was able to sweep both the one-meter and three-meter dives, with scores of 236.03 and 225.60, respectively. Hannah Swift claimed second in the three-meter scoring a 214.95 and third in the one-meter with a 200.85.
Both teams will be off this weekend as they prepare for the Terrier Invitational on Nov 19-21.
