NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Chris Piekos of Massachusetts and La Salle's John McCarthy were selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Piekos, a senior goalkeeper, started both games in goal for Massachusetts, pitching a shutout win over Xavier (2-0), while allowing just one goal against Dayton (1-1) for a draw in the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 competition. For the two games, he allowed only one goal in 200 minutes of work, made 10 total saves, and faced 33 total shots.
For the season, Piekos has started nine games and is posting a 0.95 goals-against-average, a .839 save percentage and has two shutouts. He has a 1-2-6 overall record.
The Minutemen will face A-10 and New England rival Rhode Island on Saturday night (7 PM) in Kingston.
McCarthy, a freshman goalkeeper, picks up his second consecutive Rookie of the Week citation after registering his third-straight win in front of the net and helping La Salle to its first win in A-10 play. The Cinnaminson, N.J., native stopped six shots in the Explorers' 2-1 victory over Fordham and bettered La Salle's win streak to three games, its first since 2007.
