Swimming And Diving Split With Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their final dual road meet of the season with the Red Raiders of Colgate, as the men won 182-106 while the women fell 189-110. The Minutemen are now 5-2 in dual meets on the season and a perfect 2-0 this weekend after defeating BC on Friday. The Minutewomen split the weekend with the loss after defeating BC on Friday, and fell to 4-3 overall in dual meets.
After a three win performance against Boston College on Friday, sophomore Joey Sbordon led the Minutemen with two more first-place finishes against the Red Raiders on Sunday. The Franklin, Mass. native started the day with a victory in the 1650 free with a time of 16:39.36, and followed that with a win in the 200 backstroke (2:00.91).
Beau Garufi also had a two-win day, taking both breaststroke events, registering times of 1:02.19 in the 100 and 2:16.84 in the 200. The Minutemen swept both the 200 free and 100 backstroke, as Andrew Willbrant led the way in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.49, with teammates Trevor Ziegler and Max Butler finishing second and third respectively. Freshman Jorge Fortin took the win in the 100 backstroke (54.09) with Kyle Jennings finishing second (54.87) and Sbordon taking third (54.90).
Fortin also had a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:52.24), coming in just behind Jennings who took first with a time of 4:51.13. Mike Berthaume rounded out the individual winners, notching first in the 200 butterfly (1:57.41).
Jason Cook owned the diving board for the Minutemen, finishing first in the one-meter (280.58) and three-meter (309.30) diving events. The men went on to sweep the one-meter with Conner Dunn grabbing second (245.55) and Alex Merkulov third (242.47).
Amina Meho had another strong day for the Minutewomen, leading a one-two finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.90 with teammate Jennifer Corriveau coming in just behind her in second (25.26). Meho later went on to finish second in the 100 free (54.86). The freshman had one of four first-place finishes for the Minutewomen on the day.
Sarah Kanellas followed up a two-win performance with another victory in the 100 butterfly, registering a time of 58.98. Tavis Potter also picked up another win on the weekend with a first-place finish in the 200 IM (2:13.54), following her two-win performance against BC. Chelsea Downing also had a strong day, finishing second in the 1650 free (17:48.46).
Hannah Swift led the Minutewomen diving team, winning the one-meter dive with a score of 244.64 and taking second in the three-meter dive with a score of 221.47. Michaela Butler picked-up another top-three finish, taking third in the one-meter (206.32).
Both teams will have their final dual-meet of the season next Saturday, Jan. 30 when they host Fordham for Senior Day at Joseph Rogers Pool (1 p.m.).
