UMass Splits With Fordham On Senior Day

AMHERST, Mass. - In their final dual-meet of the season, the UMass swimming and diving teams split with the Rams of Fordham University on Saturday in front of a capacity crowd at Joseph Rogers Pool for Senior Day. The Minutemen improved to 6-2 in dual-meets, winning by a tally of 179-114, while the women fell 188-112.
The teams honored ten seniors prior to the meet, as the men honored Mike Berthaume, Justin Brooks, Juan Moliere, Tim Smith and Andrew Willbrant while the women honored Joan Baltazar, Eryn Brewer, Ashley Dress Elizabeth Walsh and Liz Wester.
Sophomore diver Jason Cook started the day off with a splash, breaking his own pool record in the three-meter dive with a score of 369.30. Cook went on to win the one-meter competition as well, while teammate Adam Duffield finished just behind him, taking second in both diving events.
The Minutemen were helped by stand-out individual performances, as senior Justin Brooks swam his best time of the year in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 9:38.41, beating his previous season-best by 20 seconds and giving him a big boost in A-10 qualifying. Fellow senior Mike Berthaume also shined on senior day, ending his career at Joseph Rogers Pool with a pair of victories in the 100 fly (50.23) and 200 fly (1:53.43), while senior Juan Moliere accomplished the same feat, leading a sweep of the 50 free with a time of 21.08 and grabbing first in the 100 free (46.62).
The 200 medley relay team was able to pick-up a win as well in a race that came down to the final leg, with senior Juan Moliere just out-touching Fordham's Justin Coombs to help the Minutemen to victory with a time of 1:35.19. Last week's UMass Athlete of the Week, Joey Sbordon, picked up another individual win with a time of 1:42.34 in the 200 free.
Max Butler took home a win the 100 back in a very close race in the top-three spots. Butler used a great final turn to beat out Fordham's William Colton by .14 seconds, finishing with a time of 52.31. Teammate Jorge Fortin was in the mix as well, taking third with a time of 52.46.
The Minutewomen put up a good fight against the Rams, who came into the meet a perfect 10-0 on the year and tabbed to take home the A-10 title. Fordham set two pool records in the victory, as the 200 medley relay team set the record with a time of 1:46.64, and Brienne Ryan set the record in the 100 back with a time of 56.61, breaking Elizabeth Walsh's record of 1:00.33.
Freshman Julie Magyar swam a great race in the 1000 free, just edging out Fordham's Megan McGorry in the final two laps to take first with a time of 10:34.53. Magyar would go on to finish third in the 500 free, registering a time of 5:11.19.
The women had numerous second-place finishes, including a tight race in the 100 breaststroke that saw the Rams Nicole Marshall just beat out Jessica Starosielec by .02 seconds, as Starosielec finished second with a time of 1:06.49. Kayla Tegeler and Jennifer Corriveau also picked-up second-place finishes in the 200 fly and 50 free respectively. Sarah Kanellas also went on to finish second in the 100 fly, notching a time of 59.20, while Chelsea Downing claimed second in the 200 IM (2:11.39).
In her final meet at Joseph Rogers Pool, Elizabeth Walsh notched a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke, finishing with a time of 2:12.03. The senior also helped the 200 medley relay team to a second-place finish (1:49.88) and finished fourth in the 100 back (1:00.73).
Hannah Swift and Michaela Butler notched a one-two finish in the three-meter dive, with Swift finishing first with a score of 241.05 and Butler second (235.73). The pair went on to finish second and third respectively in the one-meter dive, with Swift scoring 221.99 and Butler 219.22.
Both teams will have one final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Championships, as they head to Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Feb. 6 for the New England Open.
