Worcester, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer season began on the road on Friday night with a 2-0 setback to Holy Cross in Angela Napoli's head coaching debut for the Minutewomen. Following the loss, UMass is 0-1-0 on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 1-0-0.
In the seventh minute, Paige Harrison successfully converted a penalty kick to put Holy Cross ahead, 1-0. A few moments later, senior Cristina Adams came within inches of tying the score as she broke through the Crusaders' back line, but put her low shot just wide of the right post.
Then in the 55th minute with the second half just underway, Liz Early sent a cross from the right over to Biz Shenk, who took several steps toward goal and fired the ball past Lauren Luckey into the bottom left corner of the net to increase Holy Cross' lead to 2-0.
Adams, who had a team-best three shots for UMass, had another opportunity in the 64th minute. However, her attempt on-frame was grabbed by Crusaders' netminder Jessica Stone.
Holy Cross held a 20-8 advantage in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks. Luckey had six saves for the Minutewomen, while Stone made two for the Crusaders. Fouls were 11-8 against Holy Cross.
UMass will be back in action this Sunday, Aug. 30, when the squad will travel to Boston University for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Nickerson Field.
