Swim Teams Both Finish Third At Terrier Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. - The UMass women's swim team saw a third school record fall at the Terrier Invitational Sunday, as both the men's and women's swim teams finished in third-place after the final day of competition. The men finished with 741.5 points, while the women had 514 points. The host team, BU, took first on both the men's and women's side.
Sophomore Chelsea Downing continued to be the story of the weekend, breaking her second school record in three days. The Falmouth, Mass. native, who broke the school's 500 freestyle record on Friday, swam a 17:10.78 in the 1650 free on Sunday, breaking a 14-year old record held by Karen Sonnwald by almost two seconds. Molly Pappish and Julie Magyar also had strong showings in the event, finishing sixth and seventh respectively for the Minutewomen.
Amina Meho took yet another top-five finish, notching fourth-place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.76. Jessica Starosielec put together another solid swim as well, finishing seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.11).
In the lone relay of the day, the team of Jennifer Corriveau, Tavis Potter, Elizabeth Walsh and Meho swam a season-best 400 freestyle relay time of 3:30.97 to grab third place.
The men's side had six individual top-five finishes in the final day Sunday. Sophomore Joey Sbordon got the day started, finishing the 1650 free in third-place with a time of 15:54.34. Kyle Jennings and Andrew Willbrant followed that performance up with a four-five finish in the 100 backstroke. Jennings took the fourth spot with a time of 1:53.42 just edging Willbrant's time of 1:53.44.
The day was highlighted by a great sprint performance in the 100 free, with three UMass swimmers in the top-ten. Trevor Ziegler led the way in third-place with a time of 46.24, while senior Juan Moliere came in just behind to take fourth with a time of 46.26. Chris Howard wrapped-up the scoring in the event with a seventh-place finish (46.69).
The Minutemen also had a strong showing in the 200 breaststroke, as Brian Schmidt had the sixth top-five performance of the day for UMass, taking third in 200 with a time of 2:10.86.
Both teams will be in action on Dec. 5, as the Minutewomen head to Northeastern and the men travel to Yale.
