NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The UMass men's swimming and diving team fell to the Bulldogs of Yale University, 193-107 Saturday night in New Haven, Conn. The loss drops the Minutemen to 3-2 in dual-meets on the season, swimming in their final dual-meet until the end of January. UMass will next prepare for the Loyola Invitational held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Jan. 9.
Jason Cook highlighted the day for the Minutemen, taking two of the team's three first-place finishes as he swept both diving events. The sophomore registered season-high scores in both the one-meter (323.47) and three-meter (347.17) diving events. John Clark also had a strong day on the diving board, finishing second in the one-meter behind Cook with a score of 271.57, while Adam Duffield grabbed third in the three-meter with a score of 290.99.
Joey Sbordon continued to be consistent in the pool, notching two second-place finishes in both the 1000 freestyle (9:48.87) and 500 freestyle (4:42.28). Teammate Jorge Fortin also continued to impress in his first year, taking second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.49 and third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.77.
The team had its strongest showing in the pool in the 50 freestyle, as Juan Moliere, Chris Howard and Sasan Tehrani finished second, third and fourth respectively to take nine points in the event.
The Minutemen had their final first-place finish in the last event of the day, as Howard, Trevor Ziegler, Fortin and Moliere swam a time of 3:06.96 to take the top spot.
UMass will be back in action at the Loyola Invitational in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Jan. 9 as part of the team's winter training trip.
