Women's Lacrosse Falls 20-11 To Harvard

AMHERST, Mass. - Kaitlin Martin scored five goals to lead Harvard to a 20-11 win over the UMass women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in McGuirk Stadium. The Crimson jumped out to a 12-5 halftime lead to improve to 2-0 on the season. Kaytlin McCormick and Julie Pasquantonio each scored a pair of goals to lead UMass which falls to 1-3 on the season. The Minutewomen will next travel to Dartmouth on Wednesday with the opening draw set for 2 p.m.
UMass outshot Harvard 41-to-32, but was just 1-for-13 on free position shots. Crimson netminder Kathryn Tylander made 15 saves for the win.
Stephanie Hopkins put UMass up 1-0 with her first goal of the season just 39 seconds into the game. Harvard, however, answered with four straight goals until McCormick netted her first of the game with 15:53 remaining in the first half to make the score 4-2.
Harvard went on another four-goal run with a pair of tallies from Jess Halpern and Tara Schoen to go up 8-2 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Holly Drown scored with 12 seconds to go until halftime looking to give the Minutewomen momentum going into halftime, but the Crimson won the ensuing draw and Martin was able to get to the net for a score with one second left for a 12-5 halftime lead.
Pasquantonio scored her first goal of the game just 18 seconds into the second half, but Harvard again responded with a pair of goals to make the score 14-6. The teams traded goals throughout the second half until Martin and Sarah Bancroft each netted goals in the final three minutes to close out the scoring.
The game was physical with 29 fouls called on Harvard and 28 called against UMass. Six cards were issued in the game including three yellows and a red on the Minutewomen.
