EVANSTON, Ill. - UMass women's lacrosse played its fifth ranked opponent of the season, this time taking on three-time national champion Northwestern and falling to the Wildcats, 18-2, on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. The game was tied, 1-1, just over four minutes in, but Northwestern scored 11-straight goals to close the half and take control of the game. Shots were 43-8 for the game, while NU also held the edge in draw controls, 13-9. With the loss, UMass falls to 1-6 on the season, while Northwestern improves to 7-0. The Minutewomen return home to take on in-state rival Boston College on Saturday at McGuirk stadium with gametime set for 3:30 p.m.
Freshman Colleen Speth (Evanston, Ill.), playing in her hometown, made 12 saves in goal for the Minutewomen. Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.) scored in the first half for UMass. Freshman Kelsey Schreiner (Sherborn, Mass.) scored the first goal of her career in the second half to account for the other UMass goal.
The Wildcats were led by Danielle Spencer with five goals and two assists.
Northwestern opened the scoring, with its first goal coming at the 26:50 mark. UMass answered less than a minute later when Zwick took the ball from behind the goal, ran by her defender and beat NU goalie Morgan Lathrop high. It was her fifth goal of the season and tied the game, 1-1, at the 25:59 mark.
The rest of the first half was all Wildcats, as they scored 11 unanswered goals, with Spencer leading the way with five, including the last three of the half. Shots were 30-2 in the opening 30 minutes.
Schreiner scored UMass' second goal at the 22:18 mark of the second half, dodging a defender and scoring at close range to make it a 14-2 game. That came after the Wildcats opened the half with two goals and then following UMass' goal, closed the game with four more.
