Women's Lacrosse Falls 12-11 In Second Half Shootout

OLEAN, N.Y. - A defensive first half gave way to a wild second half as the UMass women's lacrosse team fell on Sunday 12-11 at St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies took a 4-3 lead into half time before both teams exploded for eight goals in the second. Junior Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.) led UMass with four goals which tied her career high. The Minutewomen took a 9-5 lead 10 minutes into the second frame before SBU countered with a 7-0 run over the next 12 minutes. UMass had a chance with 17 seconds to play, but a turnover just before time expired ended the Minutewomen's hopes.
UMass falls to 6-9 overall, 1-4 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure remains perfect in league play at 5-0 and improves to 8-4 overall.
Zwick had a game-high four goals for the day. Junior Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) scored three and added an assist. She extended her scoring streak to 39 consecutive games which is the seventh longest in the nation. Senior Erica Shapiro (Norfolk, Mass.) scored her first career goal and added an assist. Shapiro's goal was crucial as it ended the Bonnies 7-0 run.
St. Bonaventure had three players with three goals for the game. Brenna Houghton, Kimberly Ross and Katelyn Faas each notched three goals. Houghton added two assists while Faas added one. For Faas, her second goal of the game was the 100th of her career which she accomplished in just 29 games.
For the game, St. Bonaventure outshot UMass 31-26 and held a 15-9 advantage in draw controls. In the second half, the Bonnies controlled six consecutive draw controls to fuel their 7-0 run.
After Shapiro and Typadis scored late in the second half to bring UMass within one, 12-11, the Minutewomen had one final chance to tie the game and force overtime. Senior Samantha Sepulveda (Freeport, N.Y.) forced a turnover behind the Bonnies cage and cleared the ball into the UMass offensive zone with 17 seconds to play. The Bonnies forced a turnover with three seconds to go to hold off the rally and secure the win.
UMass will close out its regular-season next weekend when the Minutewomen host Saint Joseph's on Friday and La Salle on Sunday at McGuirk Stadium.
