UMass Drops Close 11-10 Shootout At New Hampshire

March 20, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse

March 20, 2007

Box Score

DURHAM, N.H. - Junior Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) scored four goals and junior Kristina Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored a goal and added a career-high four assists, but it was not enough as the UMass women's lacrosse team dropped a close 11-10 decision at New Hampshire on Tuesday afternoon. Ashley Durepo scored four goals - all in the second half - including the game-winner with 4:01 to play. The Wildcats pull even on the season at 3-3, while UMass drops to 4-3.

The Minutewomen will next play No. 2 Northwestern on Friday night in Yorktown, N.Y. The game will be played at Yorktown High School and all proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Friends Of Jaclyn Murphy Foundation. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m.

The four goal day for Typadis continued her scoring streak to 31 consecutive games. She now has 102 goals in 42 games and 115 points. She moved into a tie for sixth all-time at UMass in career goals and ninth all-time in career points.

Durepo matched her career high in goals and established a personal best in points (5). Moira Talbot and Shaunna Kaplan added two goals each to lead UNH's offensive attack.

Junior Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.) scored two goals and added two assists for UMass.

With the score tied 6-6 at halftime, Durepo netted a free-position goal at 21:14 in the second half. Four minutes later, UMass responded when freshman Stephanie Hopkins (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) converted a Zwick pass to tie the game for the fourth time.

Durepo put UNH back in front with an unassisted goal at 14:17, but the Minutewomen equalized on Typadis' fourth strike of the game at 9:14 making the score 8-8.

The Wildcats then scored back-to-back goals in a 10-second stretch. Durepo scored with 7:41 to play and then Kaplan won the ensuing draw control and drove to goal for the score to put UNH up 10-8.

The Minutewomen pulled back within one when Twichell found a cutting Zwick with 6:19 to go, but Durepo answered as she cut through the middle of the UMass defense firing a low shot into the right corner of the net with 4:01 remaining for the 11-9 lead.

The Minutewomen called time out at that point and trimmed the deficit to 11-10 at 2:58. From deep on the right wing, Zwick fired a pass across to Twichell and her close-range shot found the back of the net.

UMass won the ensuing draw control but New Hampshire regained possession with 1:40 remaining when Typadis' shot from the left wing was blocked and UNH keeper Natalie Jones scooped up the loose ball.

The Wildcats went into a spread offense in an attempt to run out the clock, but turned the ball over with 41 seconds remaining. UMass gave the ball right back to UNH on an errant pass, however, and Durepo sealed the win by corralling the ball at midfield.

UNH's win ended a series streak in which the road team had won four consecutive games, and the one-goal margin of victory marked the seventh time in the last eight meetings between these teams that the winning margin was either one or two goals.

The game was a reversal of the meeting in Durham two years ago when UMass won 11-10 on a Samantha Sepulveda score with six seconds remaining.

New Hampshire held a 30-to-21 shot advantage over UMass and a 14-to-9 edge in draw controls.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) made a season-high 13 saves for UMass despite being peppered early.
