Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross Crusaders (1-0) used a seven goal second half to steal a 7-6 win over UMass (0-1) in the season opener for both teams. Kristine Corkum scored the game winner for Holy Cross with 1:16 remaining capping her four goal performance. UMass was led by junior Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) who scored two goals extending her scoring streak to 25 games spanning the last three seasons. Four other Minutewomen found the back of the net. UMass will take on No. 16/17 Boston University on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Nickerson Field. The Terriers are the two-time defending America East Conference Champions and are one of five 2006 NCAA Tournament Teams, including Holy Cross, that are on the Minutewomen's 2007 slate.

The Minutewomen jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead and looked to be in firm control. Sophomore Meghan Reddy (Salem, N.H.) scored the opening goal for UMass just under 10 minutes into the contest. Typadis, junior Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.), senior Samantha Sepulveda (Freeport, N.Y.), and freshman Stephanie Hopkins (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) each scored in the first half.

The duo of Corkum and Patricia Sutton, however, changed the momentum of the game in the second half. Just over a minute into the second half, Corkum got the Crusaders on board with her first goal of the day.

Sutton then scored back-to-back goals cutting the lead to just 5-3 in just over five minutes of play. Corkum tied the game at 5-5 with 19:08 to play in the game before Typadis scored again. Typadis scored with 11:46 to go giving the Minutewomen a 6-5 lead.

Corkum, however, responded scoring twice more to seal the comeback win.

UMass held a 27-21 shot advantage for the game but were hurt by fouls holding a 24-9 margin over Holy Cross. The transition game in the midfield hurt the Crusaders in the first half who converted just 3-of-8 clear opportunities. In the second half, however, they handled the ball better clearing 7-of-10 attempts.

Redshirt senior Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) made 10 saves on the day facing 21 shots, while her counterpart Megan Orr picked up the win making 17 saves.
