VESTAL, N.Y. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Binghamton at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center in their fourth dual meet of the season this afternoon. The Minutemen finished first in 22 of 32 events. Junior Christa Narus (Stony Brook, N.Y.), sophomore Elizabeth Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.), and junior Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) all had dual first place finishes to help lead the Minutewomen to a 192-108 victory over the Bearcats. The Minutewomen took first, second, and third place in both the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive. The Minutemen defeated the Bearcats 171-129 taking first in eight different events. Sophomore Juan Moliere (San Juan, Puerto Rico) remains undefeated in the 50 yd. freestyle (21.78). After today's win, the Minutemen improve to a 2-2 record for the season and the Minutewomen to 3-1. The women kicked off the meet taking first and third in the 200 yd. medley relay. Finishing first for the women with a time of 1:52.30 was the team of sophomore Elizabeth Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.), junior Christa Narus (Stony Brook, N.Y.), junior Celia Jenkins (Acton, Mass.), senior Allison Volpe (Pottstown, Penn.). Coming in third for the Minutewomen with a time of 1:55.36 was the team of freshman Gillian Bank (Beavercreek, Ohio), freshman Jessica Starosielec (Colonia, N.J.), senior Samantha Demty (Seekonk, Mass.), and freshman Jennifer Corriveau (Concord, N.H.).
The Minutewomen raced to first and second place finishes in seven different events. Kathryne Chalikis came in first in the 50 yd. free (25.39), second in the 100 yd. back (1:02.36), second in the 100 yd. free (56.15), and also helped the women to a first place finish in the 200 yd. medley relay and the 200 yd. freestyle relay (1:40.54). Elizabeth Walsh came in first in both the 200 yd. freestyle (1:59.24) and the 200 yd. breaststroke (2:13.80) and also swam in 200 yd. medley relay and the 200 yd. freestyle relay. Gillian Bank took first in the 100 yd. backstroke (1:01.91) while Christa Narus took first in the 200 yd. butterfly (2:07.85), the 500 yd. freestyle (5:21.06), and also helped both relays to a first place finish. In the 100 yd. freestyle the Minutewomen took first and second from Allison Volpe (54.80) and Kathryne Chalikis (56.15), respectively. Senior Samantha Demty also added a first place finish in the 400 yd. I.M. (4:40.99) and she was followed junior Jackie Porter (Holliston, Mass.) coming in second with a time of 4:44.13.
In women's diving, UMass swept both the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive. Junior Karen Upperco remained undefeated against Binghamton as she took first in both events with a score of 262.42 for her 3-meter dive and 247.80 in the 1-meter dive. Freshman Anne Fogerty (Allentown, Penn.) placed second in the 3-meter dive (252.53) and third in the 1-meter dive (206.18) while junior Sarah Horstmann came in third in the 3-meter dive (247.80) and second in the 1-meter dive (210.98).
In men's action, Juan Moliere finished first in the 50 yd. freestyle (21.78) and also in the 100 yd. freestyle (48.05). Moliere also helped the Minutemen to two first place finishes swimming the final leg in both the 200 yd. medley relay and the 200 yd. freestyle relay. Sophomore Mike Berthaume (Hampden, Mass.) paced the Minutemen swimming to a first place finish in the 200 yd. butterfly (1:56.27) and also the 100 yd. butterfly (51.28). In the 100 yd. fly Berthaume was followed by junior Nate Bromage (Three Rivers, Mass.) as he finished second (52.28) and right behind him was senior Zack Priest (Cranston, R.I.) with a time of 53.52. UMass also saw a first place finish from sophomore Andrew Willbrant (Londonderry, N.H.) in the 100 yd. backstroke (54.60). Freshman Max Butler (Duxbury, Mass.) took first in the 200 yd. backstroke (1:58.36) and second in the 100 yd. backstroke (54.83). The Minutemen swam to first and second place finishes in four different events.
In men's diving, Rueben Rappe swept with a score of 301.50 in the 1-meter dive and 300.45 in the 3-meter dive.
The UMass swimming and diving teams will head to Boston next weekend for their first invitational meet next weekend at the Boston University Terrier Invitational.
