AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts women's swim team put forth an outstanding effort against Northeastern University today at the Joseph R. Rogers Pool in Amherst, Mass. Northeastern, the first place finishers at the Boston University Terriers Invitational just two weeks ago, clinched the win in today's meet with a final score of 156-144. The UMass women's diving squad swept both the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive. Sophomore Kathryne Chalikis (Flemington, N.J.) swam exceptionally today taking second place in three events: the 50 yd. freestyle, 100 yd. butterfly, and the 100 yd. freestyle. Chalikis also helped the Minutewomen to a first place finish in the 200 yd. freestyle relay during the final event of the day.
Junior Taryn Prout (West Springfield, Mass.) set the pace today for UMass after taking second place in the 1000 yd. freestyle event. Junior Christa Narus (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and senior Samantha Demty (Seekonk, Mass.) swam to first and third place finishes, respectively, in the 200 yd. butterfly. Narus and Demty were a pair today as they finished second and third in two more events together. Narus clinched second place in the 500 yd. freestyle and Demty came in right behind her in third. In the 200 yd. I.M., Demty finished second and Narus third. Also swimming well for the Minutewomen was sophomore Elizabeth Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior Allison Volpe (Pottstown, Penn.). Volpe swam to a third place finish in the 100 yd. freestyle while also contributing to the first place finish for the 200 yd. freestyle relay team.
In diving action, junior Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.), freshman Anne Fogerty (Allentown, Penn.), and junior Sarah Horstmann (Hockessin, Del.) placed first, second, and third, respectively, in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
The UMass women's swim team will swim next at the Rhode Island Invitational in Kingston, R.I. in mid-January
