AMHERST, Mass. - Despite Jeannette Villapiano's three-goal game, the UMass women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Temple 11-10 on Sunday afternoon at Garber Field. The game was critical to the Atlantic 10 standings as Temple moves into a second-place tie with St. Bonaventure after Richmond defeated La Salle today. UMass falls to fifth-place with Duquesne beating George Washington in overtime. A-10 Tournament hopes are still alive for UMass, however, as the Minutewomen host Duquesne on Friday before heading to George Washington next Sunday.
UMass falls to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple improves to 8-6, 4-1 in the A-10. The Owls, riding a four-game win streak, are now 45-4 all-time in conference play.
After UMass tied the game at 10-10 with 12:39 to play in the game on a Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.) free position goal, the Owls were able to slow down their offensive attack eating up nearly the final eight minutes of the game. Temple's Casey Cech scored her third goal of the game with just under four minutes to go for the game-winner.
The Owls controlled the ensuing draw control to run out the final moments of the game for the win. Temple had a decisive edge in draw controls with a 17-to-6 advantage over UMass.
Corey Leader led all players with five goals on the day. Cech added three more and Whitney Richards posted three assists.
UMass was led by Villapiano's three goals, followed by sophomore Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) and senior Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) who each scored twice.
Temple jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Leader scored twice in the first eight minutes of play. Villapiano stopped the run with an unassisted goal nearly with 19:26 to go in the first half for UMass' first goal of the game.
Villapiano scored twice more in the first half and Connerty fired a laser from just outside the eight-meter arc to rally UMass back into the game trailing just 5-4 at halftime. Connerty's two goals today give her 125 career points which ranks eighth all-time in career scoring at UMass. She now has 81 career goals - just seven shy of 10th all-time - and 44 assists. Her 44 career assists ranks sixth all-time at UMass.
In the second half, Temple put up the first strike as Frengs to a Richards pass to cage pushing the lead back to 6-4 just a minute after the break.
The Minutewomen did not back down with Typadis scoring both of her goals consecutively to tie the game and then give UMass a 9-8 lead with 20:54 to play.
Typadis now has 72 career goals in 32 straight games having scored in 21 consecutive games. She needs just four more goals to crack the single season goals scored list at UMass and 16 to break into the all-time top 10 list for goals.
The Owls scored three of the final four goals with Frengs, Leader, and Cech each scoring to come back for the win. Temple closed the game running out the final eight minutes of play.
With just over 26 seconds remaining, a window opened for UMass as Katie Yori turned the ball over, but a tough pass to the middle of the field was snagged by Temple's Jessica Chadwin to regain possession for the Owls.
Temple held a 30-to-22 shot advantage on UMass, but did committ 17 turnovers to the Minutewomen's 13.
Sophomore Krissy Anderson (Baldwin, N.Y.) started the game for UMass but allowed five goals in her 19:48 of work. Redshirt junior Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) takes the hard-luck loss in just over 40 minutes of work. She made five saves while allowing six goals.
Caitlin Gregory earns the win for Temple allowing 10 goals and making four saves - none in the second half.
Seniors Lindsay Cassell (Weston, Mass.) and Jackie Nesbitt (Springfield, Pa.) anchored the UMass defense with three caused turnovers and five groundballs each. Nesbitt entered the week ranked sixth nationally and second in the A-10 in caused turnovers. She ranks second all-time at UMass in both categories.
Villapiano led all players with a career-high six groundballs.
UMass will next host Duquesne at Garber Field on Friday afternoon for its final home game of the season. The Minutewomen will honor seniors Lindsay Cassell (Weston, Mass.), Connerty, Nesbitt, and Lauren Reid (Portland, Maine). Temple will host St. Bonaventure on Friday. Both games are slated for 4:00 p.m. starts.
