UMass Ends Four-Game Road Swing On Wednesday At Hofstra
• UMass will end its four-game road swing this Wednesday when the Minutewomen head to Hempstead, N.Y. to face Hofstra at 4:00 p.m. This will be the fifth road game for UMass in the first seven contests of the season. Wednesday will be a homecoming of sorts for three Minutewomen as Krissy Anderson hails from Baldwin, N.Y. - just about five minutes from the Hofstra campus - and Jackie Rosenzweig is from Massapequa, N.Y. and Samantha Sepulveda is from Freeport, N.Y.
• The Minutewomen enter the game with a 2-4 record after falling at No. 13 Syracuse last Wednesday. That game was the third top-15 non-conference opponent UMass has faced to begin the season. Hofstra was ranked to start the season in both the IWLCA and the Inside Lacrosse Magazine Top-20 polls, but is off to a rough 1-4 start. The Pride's lone win, though, came in an upset of No. 6 Boston University last Wednesday. Both teams have been off for the last week.
Leading The Minutewomen
• UMass is led by sophomore Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) and senior Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.). Typadis leads the team with 16 points on 15 goals, while Connerty is second with 14 points on seven goals and a team-high seven assists. Sophomore Jeannette Villapiano (Ocean Township, N.J.) has already equalled her freshman year point total with 10 points on six goals and a career-high four assists through just four games.
• Redshirt junior Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) started the season in cage, but sophomore Krissy Anderson has played well of late earning her first career start at Syracuse. Anderson picked up her first career win earlier this season at Albany. Anderson is 1-1 this season, while McCarthy is 1-3.
• Defensively, senior Jackie Nesbitt (Springfield, Pa.) anchors the defensive back with 15 groundballs, nine caused turnovers and 14 draw controls. Junior Erica Shapiro (Norfolk, Mass.) leads the squad with 19 groundballs and has caused seven turnovers.
The Series With Hofstra
• UMass is looking to snap a three-game losing streak to the Pride and judging by the history of this series, Hempstead would be the best place to do that. UMass is 4-5 all-time when visiting the Pride, while conversely, the Minutewomen have never defeated Hofstra in Amherst, 0-6.
• The last time UMass defeated the Pride was on March 8, 2002 - a 12-8 win on the road which snapped a nine-game slide in the series.
• UMass picked up the first three wins of the series.
• Last season, No. 10 Hofstra scored 12 goals in the second half - five straight to start the period - to rally past UMass who led 3-2 at halftime and win the game 14-8 in Amherst. Melynda Zwick scored all three of her goals for UMass in the first half, but the Minutewomen could not stay on track in the second. Five players for Hofstra scored two goals each for the game. The Pride outshot UMass 26-to-6 in the second half.
Connerty Climbs The Charts
• Senior Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) continues to move up the all-time charts in UMass scoring history. Her three assist effort at Albany (3/11) gives her 36 for her career which ties her with Linda Haytayan-Nelson for ninth all-time. On her current pace, Connerty is projected to finish as high as fifth all-time in the category. Cari Nickerson is the all-time career leader in assists with 106. After her three-goal, one assist outburst in the win over Harvard (3/4), Connerty now has 72 goals and 108 career points. She needs just seven points and 17 goals to move into the all-time top-10 charts of each category, respectively.
• Connerty's 17-game scoring streak came to an end at Dartmouth (3/8). In her career she has tallied 16 multi-point games and seven hat tricks.
Nesbitt Anchors Defense
• Senior Jackie Nesbitt (Springfield, Pa.) has been a mainstay over her career in the defensive back. Wednesday night will mark her 38th consecutive start for UMass in 56 career games. In that span she has collected 115 groundballs, 56 draw controls and caused 56 turnovers. She has also tallied 12 goals and four assists for 16 points.
• Nesbitt ranks among the all-time top UMass defenders in groundballs, caused turnovers, and draw controls (those became official NCAA statistics in 2001). She ranks second all-time in groundballs, fifth in draw controls, and fifth in caused turnovers.
• She needs five draw controls to move into third all-time at UMass and 16 caused turnovers to move into second. To take the UMass lead in groundballs, however, she has some work to do as former UMass defensive standout Kristin St. Hilaire holds that mark with 166. St. Hilaire was the only Minutewoman ever to collect over 100 groundballs and cause over 100 turnovers.
No Sophomore Slump For Typadis
• Sophomore Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) is once again off to a strong start to lead UMass with 16 points on 15 goals. For her career, she has 51 goals in just 23 games - including nine hat tricks.
• On her current scoring pace, Typadis could end her career as the second-highest goal scorer in UMass history at a 151 projected goals. Pam Moryl - who helped UMass to the first-ever women's lacrosse NCAA Championship in 1982 and two NCAA fourth-place finishes - holds the UMass record for career goals with 170.
Villapiano Stepping Up
• Sophomore Jeannette Villapiano (Ocean Township, N.J.) has already equaled her freshman point toal through four games played this season. Villapiano has 10 points entering the Hofstra game with six goals and four assists from her midfield position.
• Villapiano - who wears head coach Carrie Bolduc's No. 30 from her Syracuse days - had eight goals and two assists in her rookie campaign.
Anderson Making An Impression In Cage
• Sophomore Krissy Anderson (Baldwin, N.Y.) did not play one minute last season as a freshman. In the loss earlier this season to Boston University, she played in her first-ever game as a Minutewoman playing nearly the final six minutes. In those few minutes, however, fans received a glimpse of what was to come. Despite giving up a goal, Anderson made to strong saves to finish the game.
• Ten days later, Anderson picked up her first win as she relieved incumbent starter Lauren McCarthy. In just over 33 minutes of work, Anderson made six saves while allowing just three goals.
• The next game out at Syracuse, Anderson earned her first career start. Despite taking the loss, Anderson did make a career-high 16 saves. Impressive considering she had quite a bit of nervousness before the game ... "I was shaking when they called out the starting line-up ... it took a couple of shots before I got settled in."
Fantastic Freshmen
• Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.), Kaytlin McCormick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Jackie Rosenzweig (South Massapequa, N.Y.) and Meghan Reddy (Salem, N.H.) have already made big impacts to start their careers at UMass. Drown, McCormick and Rosenzweig have each found regular starting rolls on the team.
• McCormick is the team's fourth-leading scorer with nine points on eight goals, while Reddy is just behind with six points having scored in every game but one.
• Drown is a strong addition to the midfield both defensively and offensively. She has three goals this season.
• Rosenzweig has started all six games in the defensive back and has six caused turnovers which ranks third on the team.
McCormick Named A-10 Rookie Of the Week (2/27)
• Freshman Kaytlin McCormick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was been named the Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Rookie of the Week (2/27) following her performance at Holy Cross. McCormick tallied four goals, three in the second half, on five shots to lead the Minutewomen in her collegiate debut. Despite playing the game in nearly two inches of snow, she also collected four groundballs and caused three turnovers.
• McCormick was a 2005 graduate of Saratoga Springs where she was a two-time U.S. Lacrosse All-American. She also earned the honor for field hockey (2005) and was a First-Team Section 2 honoree in both field hockey and lacrosse (2004, 2005). She became the first female student-athlete at Saratoga Springs to be named a two-time All-American as well as Section 2 MVP.
A New York State Of Mind
• Despite being the flagship school of Massachusetts, the Minutewomen have several team members who hail from the Empire State. New York is the most represented state on this season's roster as seven team members call the state home.
• Head coach Carrie Bolduc is an Albany native, while assistant coach Jen Nardi is from Valley Cottage, N.Y.
• Along with Twichell and Papaleo, Jackie Rosenzweig, Alana Jakas, Samantha Sepulveda, Krissy Anderson, and Katylin McCormick are all from New York.
Happy 25th Anniversary!
• It was 25 years ago that UMass won the first ever NCAA Championship in women's lacrosse. The Minutewomen posted a 10-0 record during the 1982 season and defeated Trenton State for the title.
• During their title run, UMass defeated Boston University (18-0), Harvard (5-3), Dartmouth (13-3), New Hampshire (5-4), and Boston College (10-2).
• The Minutewomen followed their NCAA title with a pair of fourth-place finishes in 1983 and 1984.
UMass Among The A-10
• UMass boasts the second best all-time record in league play among conference members. Temple holds the best record among league rivals at 41-3, while UMass is 28-16.
• UMass finished third in the conferencein 2004 with a 4-3 record.
• The Minutewomen are now 7-0 all-time in their league-opener after defeating La Salle in 2005.
• The Minutewomen were picked to finish second in the conference this year by the league's coaches in a preseason vote.
• In the six years affiliated with the league, UMass has one regular season title and one tournament title to its name (both in 2000).
UMass Picked Sixth In A-10 Preseason coaches Poll
• The women's lacrosse team was picked to finish sixth in the Atlantic 10 Conference entering the 2006 season as voted on by the league's coaches in a preseason poll. The Minutewomen tied for seventh in the A-10 in 2005 with a 1-6 conference mark.
• Temple was the top pick in the league, followed by the Richmond, George Washington and Duquesne/St. Bonaventure. La Salle and Saint Joseph's were picked to finish seventh and eighth, respectively.
• With the exception of 2005, UMass has finished no lower than third since 1999 in the conference highlighted by a tournament crown in 2000.
No Easy Schedule
• Six of this season's 17 scheduled opponents are ranked or receiving votes in the IWLCA Top-20 Poll: #3 Dartmouth, #9 Boston University, #13 Syracuse, #16 Hofstra, and #20 Temple. Richmond is just three votes shy of being ranked, but the Spiders are receiving votes.
