WORCESTER, Mass. - Despite the rain in Worcester, the UMass women's soccer team earned its first road win of the season with a 1-0 shutout of Holy Cross, keeping a perfect 6-0 record intact against the Crusaders. The Minutewomen now head into Sunday's home match with Vermont with a 3-2-1 record (2-0 at home).
"We came out aggressive very early and we were very attack-oriented," said head coach Jim Rudy. "Within a 15-minute span, we nearly had three goals. Holy Cross then got into the game more with some physical play, so we made a change at the half, starting Vanessa Lima and Adair Blyler. They were instrumental in changing the game and our technical level took over. Nevertheless, a one-goal lead keeps you nervy."
The sophomore duo of Jenny Roehrig and Britt Canfield came up with the scoring on Friday afternoon, with Roehrig collecting her second goal of the season at the 1:37 mark. Canfield shot the ball off the right flank and Holy Cross goalie Cashel Scanlon blocked the initial shot, but was unable to control the rebound. Roehrig scored off the deflection from the middle of the box to make it a 1-0 game.
Goalie Kristin Walker earned her seventh shutout of the season with the win.
UMass' Rudd-field advantage will be put to the test vs. the Catamounts on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. The Minutewomen have outscored their opponents 7-0 in their three wins of 2005. UVM is 2-4 this season and plays Rhode Island Friday night at 7 p.m. The wins have come against Robert Morris (4-1) and Marist (4-2). Nikkie Hessney and Amy Cochran have nine points each heading into the match.
