AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts suffered its first loss at home this season on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 decision to Vermont. UMass outshot UVM 23-7, but Laura Kissock was up to the task in net, allowing only one goal to Britt Canfield. The Minutewomen are now .500 on the season (3-3-1).

Canfield opened the scoring at 38:47 with her second goal of the season, assisted by Jenny Roehrig. This is the second-consecutive game that the duo has been responsible for the team scoring. Roehrig connected with Canfield, who faked out Kissock and shot from the right side for the 1-0 lead.

That lead was nullified under two minutes later when Amy Cochran scored off a corner kick by Melissa Witkiewicz at 40:29. The Catamounts built on that lead at 43:49 when Cochran headed the ball past UMass goalkeeper Kristin Walker to make it 2-1.

The Minutewomen regrouped and pushed hard for the remainder of the match, having one-on-one chances with Kissock, as well as hitting a post, but could not score to force overtime.

"Every team has their five minutes," said head coach Jim Rudy. "We played extremely well for 85 minutes, but Vermont had their chance to shine for those five minutes and took advantage of that. I would say that in the last two games, we've had about 40 quality scoring chances, but have had a tough time coming through. At Holy Cross we played with the lead all game and came out on top. But we couldn't come back today when we needed to."

Walker finished the game with three saves. UMass had 12 corner kicks compared to UVM's four.

The Minutewomen are back in action on Wednesday at Rudd Field when they host Dartmouth at 4 p.m.. You can follow the action online via gametracker, or by listening live using Sports Juice.
