AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts kicks off its 2005 fall schedule on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Noon when the current Minutewomen take on the Alumni at historic Garber Field. UMass will host one other tournament the next Saturday before taking to the road for much of October.
Fans can also come out to catch an early peek of the women's lacrosse team on Saturday, Sept. 24 when the Minutewomen host the UMass Fall Play Day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
In October, UMass will see heavy action against some of the top lacrosse teams in the region. The Minutewomen start the month at the Brown Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 2.
The squad will take two weeks off before playing in the Dartmouth Tournament on Oct. 23. UMass is slated to play UConn starting at 2:30 p.m., Dartmouth at 4:30 p.m., and New Hampshire at 5:00 p.m.
The following week, the Minutewomen head to Yale for a 2:00 p.m. start to finish the fall season.
UMass returns 18 letterwinners, including 10 starters, for last season's team. Offensively, the Minutewomen return their top threats in senior Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.). The duo combined for 70 goals and 94 points in 2004. Defensively, senior Jackie Nesbitt (Springfield, Pa.) and junior Erica Shapiro (Norfolk, Mass.) anchor the Minutewomen. Nesbitt led the Minutewomen in 2004 with 56 groundballs and 20 caused turnovers.
The Minutewomen have a talented group of newcomers joining the program as well, highlighted by freshmen Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.), Kaytlin McCormick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), and Jamie Whiteway (Billerica, Mass.) who were all 2005 U.S. Lacrosse High School All-Americans.
Head Coach Carrie Bolduc enters her fourth season at the helm of UMass. This is her seventh year with the program as she served as an assistant coach for three years prior to being named the head coach. Her staff includes former UMass All-Americans Tracey Drown, who enters her second year, and Jen Nardi, who has just returned to her alma mater from a two-year stint at the University of California.
