Minutewomen Host No. 13 Syracuse On Saturday
• UMass faces No 13 Syracuse on Saturday at Garber Field starting at Noon. The Minutewomen are looking to avenge a heartbreaking 12-11 loss to the Orange last season and break a five-game Syracuse win streak in the all-time series.
• Head coach Carrie Bolduc faces her alma mater for the third time in her career. Bolduc transferred to Syracuse playing as a junior and senior (1998-99). As a two-time captain, she guided the Orange to an ECAC Championship in 1999.
• Saturday's game will also be the third time Bolduc has faced her former head coach. Orange head coach Lisa Miller, now in her eighth season, has guided the women's lacrosse team since its inception in 1998.
• The Minutewomen are led by freshman Kathleen Typadis (14g, 4a) and junior Kerri Connerty (10g, 3a), while the Orange are led by Caitlyn Dragon (12g, 4a) and Monica Joines (12g, 3a).
• Typadis earned her second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor on Monday (3/14), while Connerty was named the league's Player of the Week after the duo's performance in the win over Albany (3/13).
• Typadis is having an outstanding season to date as she is on track to shatter the freshman scoring record for UMass. She is also the first player in a decade to post four consecutive hat tricks which she has done in her first four collegiate games.
UMass Defeats Albany 19-10 On Garber Field
• Junior Kerri Connerty scored a career-high six goals and assisted on two other scores to lead the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 19-10 win over the Albany Great Danes. Freshmen Kathleen Typadis and Ashleigh Szawlowski each posted hat tricks as the Minutewomen even their season record at 2-2.
• The Minutewomen jumped out to a quick 3-0 start as Szawlowski and Connerty each struck home within the first minute of play. Typadis added her first score of the game at the 5:37 into action converting a free position shot.
• UMass answered Albany's first score of the game with a three-goal flurry from Connerty and Szawlowski. Szawlowski put home back-to-back goals just over minute apart to give the Minutewomen a 6-1 advantage half way throught the first period. The Great Danes pulled within three goals, 6-3, with five minutes to play in the half. The team's traded goals from that point until Connerty notched her fourth goal of the half with just 40 seconds remaining in the period to put UMass up 9-5 at intermission.
• Typadis and Fontana each traded free position shots to start the second half until the Minutewomen put the game away with four consecutive goals. Jackie Nesbitt scored twice in that run bookending goals from Connerty and freshman Melynda Zwick.

• Connerty ended an Albany three-goal streak with her final goal of the day coming in the 48th minute of play. For her career, Connerty has now scored 10 goals and posted seven assists against the Danes. Last season it was her go-ahead goal that secured the 17-15 UMass win as they fought back from a second-half deficit.
• UMass closed the game with two goals from sophomore Shelley Boyle and a strike from sophomore Samantha Sepulveda - her first of the season.
Typadis Earns Second A-10 Weekly Honor
• Freshman Kathleen Typadis earned her second A-10 weekly honor on Monday (3/14) for her efforts in the win over Albany. She was tabbed the league's Co-Rookie of the Week after scoring four goals and adding two assists.
• Earlier this season, she was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week for the week ending on Monday, Feb. 28, after she scored three goals and assisted on another in her rookie debut helping UMass defeat Holy Cross (2/26).
• Her three goals against the Crusaders were the most by a freshman in a season-opener over the last five seasons. Typadis joins four other freshman over that time period to score three-or-more goals in a game: 5, Angela McMahon vs. Vermont (3/28/01); 4, Briana Bubeck at Albany (3/17/04); 3, Maura McGarity at George Washington (3/16/02); 3, Miriam Godfrey vs. Vermont (3/28/01).
More On Typadis
• With another hat trick performance this Saturday, Typadis would become only the second UMass women's lacrosse player to have five games of three-or-more goals in her freshman season. Joanna Dignazio totaled six such games in 1995, including four consecutive games.
• Dignazio also holds the record for the most freshman goals in the women's lacrosse modern era (since 1995) with 33 goals in 13 games during the 1995 campaign. She also handed out five assists to total 38 points.
• Typadis is currently tied for second in total goals among A-10 players and fourth in goals per game (3.50). She also ranks third in the league for points per game at 4.50 and is tied for fifth in assists per game (1.00).
• The Medfield, Mass. native was the first Medfield HS player to score 100 career goals highlighted by 77 scores in her senior season.
• The freshman also enjoys playing the guitar - she takes her guitar with her on road trips and is part of the three member band `Agoo' made up of Typadis and fellow freshmen Kristina Twichell and Julie Papaleo.

Connerty Named A-10 Player of the Week
• Connerty earned the second Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honor of her career after scoring a career-high six goals against visiting Albany on Sunday. She also assisted on two other scores to give her a career-high eight points in the 19-10 win.
• For her career, Connerty has now scored 10 goals and posted seven assists against the Danes. Last season it was her go-ahead goal that secured the 17-15 UMass win as they fought back from a second-half deficit. In this season's meeting, it was her final goal of the game which ended a three-goal Albany rally pulling the Danes within five, 14-9, which sealed the victory.
• The junior now has 43 goals and 16 assists in 37 career games played.
Inside The Series
• Syracuse owns an all-time record of 5-2 against UMass in the series history. The Orange have won the last five games.
• UMass hosted Syracuse in its inaugural season (1998). The Bolduc led Orange lost to UMass 18-8 in 1998 and 13-12 in 1999.
• A win on Saturday will not only snap a five game Syracuse win streak but will also even the record at home at 2-2.
• A win would also be Bolduc's first career win against her alma mater.
Scouting The Orange
• Syracuse comes to Amherst after picking up a 10-4 win at Harvard on Wednesday. Senior Caitlyn Dragon scored a career-high six points on four goals and two assists as the Orange improved to 3-2 on the season.
• In the first half against the Crimson, Syracuse took a 5-1 lead holding Harvard scoreless for the first 24:52 of the game.
• Syracuse is led by Dragon (12g, 4a) and fellow senior Monica Joines (12g, 3a) on the season. Melody Agnew leads the team in assists with six, while scoring nine goals.
• Defensively, Jen Kasel has started every game this season posting a 7.27 goals against average while making 35 saves in the cage. Chelsea Strodel leads the team with 15 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers.
• Joines was selected at the beginning of the season to the Tewaaraton Trophy watch list ... she was also named the BIG EAST's Preseason Player of the Year entering the season ... The Orange will play six teams currently ranked in the IWLCA top-20 this season: Virginia, Georgetown, Loyola, Dartmouth, Maryland. Notre Dame was previously ranked, but fell out of the top 20 this past week.
The Last Time They Met: Syracuse 12, UMass 11 (3/19/04)
• No. 9 Syracuse scored the game-winning goal with just five seconds remaining in the contest, after overcoming a late two-goal deficit to defeat UMass 12-11 in the Orange Dome.
• SU controlled the scoring early on, as they jumped out to a four-goal lead to begin the game, before senior attacker Hope Zelinger tallied the first UMass goal, unassisted, with 6:57 remaining in the first half. Syracuse scored another to make it a 5-1 lead, but junior captain Maura McGarrity notched her first of the game at 3:15, to cut it back down to a three-goal lead. Syracuse scored once more just over a minute later, followed by consecutive goals by Zelinger and McGarrity, each scoring their second unassisted tallies of the game. SU scored once more in the first half to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
• The Minutewomen offense found their spark to begin the second half, as they went on a 6-0 run spanning 19:28 to take a 10-7 lead. McGarrity, senior captain Tracey Drown and Zelinger scored the first three goals, respectively. Zelinger assisted on Drown's goal, while the other two were unassisted. Drown then scored two more, one unassisted and one on a give from sophomore midfielder Kerri Connerty. Connerty then got a goal of her own, as she hit the back of the net at 9:45, unassisted.
• Syracuse was not finished however, as they got goals at 8:36 and 5:41, to cut the Minutewoman lead to one. McGarrity's fourth of the game extended the UMass lead back to two at the 4:54 mark before the Orangewomen went on a three-goal run to win the game. The game-tying goal was scored with 00:36 left, and the game-winner was tallied with just five seconds left to play.
• Junior goalkeeper Joey Rubin was between the pipes for the Minutewomen, making 11 saves in the game. Her counterpart from Syracuse, Jennifer Kasel, made nine saves.
UMass Picked Second In A-10 Preseason Poll
• The women's lacrosse team has been picked second in the Atlantic 10 Conference entering the 2005 season as picked by the league's coaches in a preseason poll. The Minutewomen finished third in the A-10 last year with a 4-3 conference mark. UMass fell in the league semifinals last season to Temple who won the conference title before losing to Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
• Duquesne is the top pick in the league, followed by the Minutewomen, Richmond and Temple. George Washington and St. Bonaventure are tied for fifth in the poll with La Salle and Saint Joseph's rounding out the picks.
• Since 1999, UMass has finished no lower than third in the conference highlighted by a tournament crown in 2000.

No Easy Schedule
• Five of this season's 17 scheduled opponents are ranked in the IWLCA Top-20 Poll: Dartmouth, Hofstra, Syracuse, New Hampshire, and Boston University. Dartmouth leads the packed ranked 10th in the poll.
• Hofstra cracked the top-10 in the most recent poll with a No. 7 ranking after reeling off a 4-0 record to start the season. Dartmouth is just behind the Pride at the No. 8 spot.
Game Versus Syracuse To Be Broadcast
• After winning the UMassAthletics.com fan poll, the women's lacrosse game against Syracuse will be broadcast live on the Internet. The marquee match-up will highlight a spring sports package of 10-12 games to be carried live on the official web site of UMass athletics.
• The games will be spread out among the women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse, softball and baseball teams. Other games to be broadcast will be announced later in the season.
Minutewomen Host School-Record 10 Games
• The 10 home games in 2005 is the most ever in program history which should give the Minutewomen a distinct advantage.
• The home schedule includes two sets of three-game home stands.
• Head coach Carrie Bolduc will face her alma mater on March 19 as the Minutewomen host Syracuse.
• All-time UMass is 78-65-2 in front of the UMass faithful.
Veteran St. Hilaire Leads Minutewomen Defense
• Fifth-year senior Kristin St. Hilaire anchors the Minutewomen from her defensive spot in 2005. The native of Syracuse, N.Y. was named the 2004 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year after her performance down low last season.
• Additionally, she is a three-time selection to the A-10 All-Conference team, a two-time member of the A-10 All-Tournament team and a two-time IWLCA All-Region selection.
• The veteran has started all 50 career contests - the only returning player to start every game played.
New Faces
• 13 members of the Minutewomen are new. Along with the 13 freshmen players, UMass has three sophomores on the roster.
• Among A-10 teams, UMass features the most freshmen players followed by Temple and Richmond which have nine each.
• Richmond has one of the youngest rosters in the league featuring 18 underclassmen on its 26 player roster.
Drown Named Assistant
• That is a familiar face you see on the UMass sideline, but Tracey Drown has switched roles this season making the transition from All-American player to Assistant coach. On August 19, Drown was named assistant to head coach Carrie Bolduc. She was a third-team All-American as a senior in 2004 leading UMass with 47 goals and 17 assists. Those 47 goals were the second most in a single-season for the Minutewomen. For her career, Drown tallied 61 goals and 20 assists picking up All-Conference and All-Region honors as a senior.
Pavlick, Murphy Return To Garber Field As Head Coaches of Holy Cross and Richmond
• This season two former Minutewomen return to Garber Field as head coaches of the opposition. Stephanie Pavlick whose Holy Cross Crusaders open the season for UMass played from 1997-2000 for the Maroon and White. Richmond head mentor Sue Murphy played for UMass from 1987-90 guiding the Minutewomen to two ECAC runner-up finishes (1987, 1988). Murphy had a stand-out career as she ranks second in career goals (125), fourth in career assists (57) and third in career points (182).
Four Sign Early NLI's
• Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.), Kaytlin McCormick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Julie Pasquantonio (Plainville, Mass.), and Jamie Whiteway (Billerica, Mass.) have all signed National Letters of Intent to play women's lacrosse at the UMass.
• The quartet is highlighted by two high school All-Americans in McCormick and Drown.
• An honorable mention All-American selection, Drown joins her sister, assistant coach Tracey Drown, at UMass. Drown was the 2004 New Hampshire Telegraph Player of the Year and a two-year All-New Hampshire selection. The midfielder will even take on a familiar number when she suits up for the Maroon and White wearing number 22 which was last worn by her sister.
• McCormick, an All-American selection in both her prep field hockey and lacrosse careers, will also compliment the UMass corps of midfielders. The senior at Saratoga Springs High School led the Blue Streaks to its first New York Section II title since 1994 this season. As a junior, she posted 66 goals leading her team to the section finals.
• Pasquantonio, who was also recruited by Syracuse, was the Hockomock League Player of the Year. She led King Philip Regional High School last season with a conference-best 86 points after moving into the midfield from the defensive back. Her play as a junior guided King Philip to a league title and a trip to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association South sectional quarterfinals.
• Joining Pasquantonio from the MassElite club team is Whiteway who was the Merrimack Valley Player of the Year as a goalkeeper. A two-time Lower New England selection and member of the Massachusetts Elite team, Whiteway was also the team captain of the cross country team and a member of the indoor track team. Her quickness in goal is enhanced by her black belt in Kung Fu - the highest level of the martial art form.
