UMass Defeats Holy Cross In Season Opener

  • Junior midfielder Kerri Connerty scored a career-high four goals to lead the women's lacrosse team to a 14-11 win last Saturday over in-state rival Holy Cross. Sophomore Shelley Boyle and freshman Kathleen Typadis each added three goals as UMass improved to 9-1 in the all-time series.
  • Despite falling behind 4-0 early in the game, the Minutewomen rallied back to take a 7-5 halftime lead. Connerty's second tally of the game sparked six unanswered UMass goals capped by Typadis third of the day in her collegiate debut.
  • Draw controls were a big advantage for UMass as it captured 18 of the 25.
  • Junior Lauren McCarthy made nine saves in the cage facing 23 shots from Holy Cross.

Kathleen Typadis became the first freshman in the last five years to score a hat trick in her collegiate debut.

Kathleen Typadis Named A-10 Rookie Of The Week

  • Freshman Kathleen Typadis scored three goals and assisted on another in her rookie debut helping UMass defeat Holy Cross (2/26).
  • After trailing 4-0 early, Typadis scored back-to-back goals in the midst of a UMass rally to tie the game at 4-4. She tacked on her third score 52 seconds into the second half capping a six goal UMass flurry for the hat trick in her first collegiate start.
  • Her three goals were the most by a freshman in a season-opener over the last five seasons. Typadis joins four other freshman over that time period to score three-or-more goals in a game: 5, Angela McMahon vs. Vermont (3/28/01); 4, Briana Bubeck at Albany (3/17/04); 3, Maura McGarity at George Washington (3/16/02); 3, Miriam Godfrey vs. Vermont (3/28/01)

    Inside The Series

  • UMass owns a 10-2 all-time record in the series against Boston University. In Boston, the Minutewomen are 5-1. The Terriers have won two straight contests, one in Boston and one in Amherst.
  • Boston University won last season's contest (3/3) at Garber Field 12-9. Prior to that, the Terriers won the March 17, 1999 meeting in Boston by a score of 10-6.
  • The first recorded meeting between the two schools was on April 6, 1978 in Boston, but no score was found in the UMass archives. The first recorded score for a game was on April 3, 1980 - a 16-2 UMass win at Garber Field.

    Scouting The Terriers

  • Wednesday's match-up will be the season opener for Boston University. Last season, the Terriers posted a 9-10 overall record, but earned their sixth consecutive trip to the America East Championship game after posting a 5-1 league record. BU struggled against regional rivals posting a 3-7 mark.
  • Kelly Trahon, the No. 2 returning scorer, will be sidelined for the 2005 season after suffering an ACL tear in her left knee during a February practice.
  • Two-time All-Conference selection Mary Beth Miller and 2004 All-Rookie Team member Angie Martin are the top attacks for Boston University in the early going.
  • The BU midfield returns four veterans led by the squads top scorer a season ago in Lindsay Lewis. In 2004, she posted 50 goals, 66 points, 45 draw controls and 17 multi-point efforts. She enters 2005 with a program-record 35 game scoring streak.
  • Senior Anne Sheridan will lead the Terriers in the Cage. For her career she boasts an 8.14 goals against average and has made 310 saves. Her back-up is freshman Jenna Golden.
  • BU will host the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship • Alyssa Trudel was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List which honors the top male and female varsity lacrosse player in the nation • BU was picked to win the America East Conference in the league's preseason coaches poll • Lewis, Trudel, and Miller were each named to the Inside Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-America Third Team • BU was ranked 20th in the publication's preseason Top 20 poll.

Junior Kerri Connerty scored four goals in the season opener against Holy Cross. Last season, she had a pair of goals and assists in the loss to Boston University.

The Last Time They Met: No. 10 BU 12, UMass 9

  • Senior attacker Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) led a second-half charge, logging her second consecutive four-goal game, but UMass could not overtake the Terriers.
  • Massachusetts jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, as sophomore Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) scored on two straight free position shots. Boston University then scored six consecutive goals to make it a 6-2 UMass deficit, early in the second half. Zelinger ended the scoring drought as she hit the back of the net 4:51 into the second half.
  • BU then reeled off three more goals, to make it a 9-3 Terrier edge. Two more Zelinger goals and another Boston University goal made the score 10-5 with 16:50 left to play. Senior captain Tracey Drown (Nashua, N.H.) scored her first and second goals of the season within 48 seconds of each other to cut the BU lead to three.
  • Zelinger's fourth of the game with 7:29 left and another Drown goal with 4:04 left to play cut the Terriers' lead to one, at 10-9. That is as close as the Minutewomen would come, however, as the Terriers scored the final two goals to put the game away.
  • Boston University was led by sophomore attacker Mary Beth Miller, who scored four goals on five shots. Fellow sophomores Lindsay Lewis and Kaitlyn Cuneo each contributed three-goal efforts. Lewis' third goal of the game proved to be the game-winner.
  • Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) surrendered 12 goals, while making 12 saves, to go to 1-1 on the season. Her counterpart, junior Anne Sheridan, made 10 saves while giving up nine goals for the Terriers.

UMass Picked Second In A-10 Preseason Poll

  • The women's lacrosse team has been picked second in the Atlantic 10 Conference entering the 2005 season as picked by the league's coaches in a preseason poll. The Minutewomen finished third in the A-10 last year with a 4-3 conference mark. UMass fell in the league semifinals last season to Temple who won the conference title before losing to Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Duquesne is the top pick in the league, followed by the Minutewomen, Richmond and Temple. George Washington and St. Bonaventure are tied for fifth in the poll with La Salle and Saint Joseph's rounding out the picks.
  • Since 1999, UMass has finished no lower than third in the conference highlighted by a tournament crown in 2000.

Game Versus Syracuse To Be Broadcast

  • After winning the UMassAthletics.com fan poll, the women's lacrosse game against Syracuse will be broadcast live on the Internet. The marquee match-up will highlight a spring sports package of 10-12 games to be carried live on the official web site of UMass athletics.
  • The games will be spread out among the women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse, softball and baseball teams. Other games to be broadcast will be announced later in the season.

  • All-time UMass is 78-65-2 in front of the UMass faithful.

Senior Kristin St. Hilaire anchors a veteran defensive unit.

Veteran St. Hilaire Leads Minutewomen Defense

  • Fifth-year senior Kristin St. Hilaire anchors the Minutewomen from her defensive spot in 2005. The native of Syracuse, N.Y. was named the 2004 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year after her performance down low last season.
  • Additionally, she is a three-time selection to the A-10 All-Conference team, a two-time member of the A-10 All-Tournament team and a two-time IWLCA All-Region selection.
  • The veteran has started all 50 career contests - the only returning player to start every game played.

    New Faces

  • 13 members of the Minutewomen are new. Along with the 13 freshmen players, UMass has three sophomores on the roster.
  • Among A-10 teams, UMass features the most freshmen players followed by Temple and Richmond which have nine each.
  • Richmond has one of the youngest rosters in the league featuring 18 underclassmen on its 26 player roster.

Shelley Boyle scored a career-high three goals in the season-opening win over Holy Cross.

    Drown Named Assistant

  • That is a familiar face you see on the UMass sideline, but Tracey Drown has switched roles this season making the transition from All-American player to Assistant coach. On August 19, Drown was named assistant to head coach Carrie Bolduc. She was a third-team All-American as a senior in 2004 leading UMass with 47 goals and 17 assists. Those 47 goals were the second most in a single-season for the Minutewomen. For her career, Drown tallied 61 goals and 20 assists picking up All-Conference and All-Region honors as a senior.

Pavlick, Murphy Return To Garber Field As Head Coaches of Holy Cross and Richmond

  • This season two former Minutewomen return to Garber Field as head coaches of the opposition. Stephanie Pavlick whose Holy Cross Crusaders open the season for UMass played from 1997-2000 for the Maroon and White. Richmond head mentor Sue Murphy played for UMass from 1987-90 guiding the Minutewomen to two ECAC runner-up finishes (1987, 1988). Murphy had a stand-out career as she ranks second in career goals (125), fourth in career assists (57) and third in career points (182).

    Four Sign Early NLI's

  • Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.), Kaytlin McCormick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Julie Pasquantonio (Plainville, Mass.), and Jamie Whiteway (Billerica, Mass.) have all signed National Letters of Intent to play women's lacrosse at the UMass.
  • The quartet is highlighted by two high school All-Americans in McCormick and Drown.
  • An honorable mention All-American selection, Drown joins her sister, assistant coach Tracey Drown, at UMass. Drown was the 2004 New Hampshire Telegraph Player of the Year and a two-year All-New Hampshire selection. The midfielder will even take on a familiar number when she suits up for the Maroon and White wearing number 22 which was last worn by her sister.
  • McCormick, an All-American selection in both her prep field hockey and lacrosse careers, will also compliment the UMass corps of midfielders. The senior at Saratoga Springs High School led the Blue Streaks to its first New York Section II title since 1994 this season. As a junior, she posted 66 goals leading her team to the section finals.
  • Pasquantonio, who was also recruited by Syracuse, was the Hockomock League Player of the Year. She led King Philip Regional High School last season with a conference-best 86 points after moving into the midfield from the defensive back. Her play as a junior guided King Philip to a league title and a trip to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association South sectional quarterfinals.
  • Joining Pasquantonio from the MassElite club team is Whiteway who was the Merrimack Valley Player of the Year as a goalkeeper. A two-time Lower New England selection and member of the Massachusetts Elite team, Whiteway was also the team captain of the cross country team and a member of the indoor track team. Her quickness in goal is enhanced by her black belt in Kung Fu - the highest level of the martial art form. Gabe Barnard and Colin Burns, dot the roster. All told, there are 17 freshmen and sophomores on the squad.
