UMass Finishes Weekend Strong at Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, RI - UMass finished off a great weekend at the Brown Invitational on Sunday. Both the men and the women had plenty to cheer about as they had top ten finishes in nearly every event. Team results were not made available by Brown.
After a good start on Friday, the men did not slow down. The team of Evan Swisher (North Bennington, Vt.), Mike Cordes (Highland Lakes, N.J.), Nate Bromage (Three Rivers, Mass.), and Mike Herald (Chambersberg, Pa.) took second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:35.01. In the 400-yard IM, Greg Chartier (Amherst, Mass.)and Brad Sloan (Shrewsbury, Pa.) placed sixth and seventh, respectively. UMass put three swimmers in the top ten in the 100-yard fly. Bromage finished second in 50.07, while Herald took seventh and Tristan Partridge (Lake Forest, Ill.) placed tenth. In the 200-yard free, A.J. Vozella (Weymouth, Mass.) placed fifth with his time of 1:44.92. The 100-yard breaststroke saw four Minutemen finish in the top ten. Jake Hogue (Grand Junction, Colo.) took second in 59.44. He was closely followed by John Weaver (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who finished third in 59.49 and Ross Clay (North Andover, Mass.) who finished fourth in 59.59. Cordes finished ninth (1:00.90). Swisher garnered a second place finish in the 100-yard back (52.22), while Greg Braun (Boulder, Colo.) finished tenth in 55.30.
The Minutemen swam away with first place in the 800-yard free relay as Swisher, Chartier, Bromage and Vozella combined for a time of 6:57.69. In the 1650-yard free, Jeremy Dam (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Sloan places seventh and tenth, respecitvely. Swisher earned another second place finish as he swam the 200-yard back in 1:51.56. In the 100-yard free, Vozella (47.13) placed second and Braun (48.28) placed eighth. The 200-yard breast saw another first place finish for the Minutemen as Hogue took the top spot in 2:10.84. He was followed by Weaver (second) and Clay (third). Partridge placed seventh in the 200-yard fly (1:56.33), while Zack Priest (Cranston, R.I.) placed tenth.
The women also picked up where they left off on Friday as the team of Allison Volpe (Pottstown, Pa.), Melissa Stango (Cheshire, Conn.), Christa Narus (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Nicole LeBarge (Lee, N.H.) finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:52.21). In the 400-yard IM, Jackie Porter (Holliston, Mass.) placed seventh in 4:39.69. Narus took ninth in the 100-yard fly (58.76) and Kelly Hoffrage (St. Charles, Ill.) tied for tenth in the 200-yard free. Taryn Prout (West Springfield, Mass.) placed eighth in the 100-yard back in 1:00.70.
Aimee Bourassa (Ottawa, Ontario), Prout, Narus and Hoffrage teamed up for a fourth place finish in the 800-yard relay (7:49.85). The Minutewomen had three swimmers in the top ten in the 1650-yard free. Prout (18:14.00) finished sixth, Laura Whelton (Wrentham, Mass.) placed seventh and Kaitlyn McDonough (Braintree, Mass.) finished tenth. Narus added a sixth place finish in the 200-yard fly (2:09.13). In the 400-yard free relay, the team of Narus, LeBarge, Bourassa and Hoffrage combined for a third place finish in 3:36.81.
Both the men and women return to action on January 7, 2006, when they travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Sacred Heart Invitational.
