UMass Splits Weekend at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - UMass recorded a split with host Boston College over the weekend. The men, winning 11 events, swam away with the 181-119 victory. Meanwhile, the women lost 179-121.
The men set the tone early as Evan Swisher (North Bennington, Vt.), Mike Cordes (Highland Lakes, N.J.), Nate Bromage (Three Rivers, Mass.) and Gordon Leonard (Cinnaminson, N.J.) took first in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of A.J. Vozella (Weymouth, Mass.), Mike Herald (Chambersberg, Pa.), Cordes and Chris Chambers (Westfield, Mass.) combined for a second place finish in the 400-yard free relay.
Swisher (53.40) took first place in the 100-yard backstroke. He later followed with a victory in the 200-yard backstroke as he swam the second fastest time of the year for the team (1:55.32). In the 200-yard IM, Swisher earned his third victory of the day (1:57.62).
John Weaver (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.01. Teammate Jake Hogue (Grand Junction, Colo.) placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.25).
Diver Reuben Rappe (Farmington, Minn.) had a record day as he took first in the one-meter dive (316.73) and the three-meter dive (319.05). Both scores for Rappe were season bests.
Kevin Cabriales (Moorpark, Calif.) took first in the 50-yard free (22.73) and also earned a victory in the 100-yard fly (53.04). Tristan Partridge (Lake Forest, Ill.) took first in the 200-yard fly (2:01.09).
For the women, diver Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) led the way. Upperco won both the one-meter (239.85) and three-meter (286.13) diving events. Her three-meter score was the best score of the season for the women.
Liz Lovejoy (Reading, Mass.) and Taryn Prout (West Springfield, Mass.) also won for the women. Lovejoy won the 200-yard fly in 2:11.21, while Prout took the 500-yard free (5:18.75).
Jackie Porter (Holliston, Mass.) took second in the 200-yard breaststroke. Her time of 2:32.55 was the second fastest time of the season for the women in that event.
The women return to action on Sunday against Central Connecticut before both teams return home to face Fordham on January 28, 2006.
