Drown, Varsity Eight Named Athletes Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. - All eight members of the Atlantic 10 Champion Varsity-Eight boat, as well as senior captain Tracey Drown (Nashua, N.H.) of the women's lacrosse team, were named co-UMass / Dinn Brothers Athletes of the Week this week, announced by the Sports Luncheon Committee this afternoon.
The UMass varsity eight won the Atlantic 10 championship this past weekend with a time of 6:43.0. The victory led head coach Jim Dietz' crew to its ninth consecutive conference rowing championship. UMass is currently ranked 19th in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll. The eight rowers of the championship boat are senior Hayley McGrath (Florence, Mass.), senior Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.), junior Lea Jakobsen (Copenhagen, Denmark), senior Lauren Cromwell (Missoula, Mont.), senior Katie O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.), sophomore Stephanie Hopf (Hadley, Mass.), junior Faith Harkins (Marion, Mass.), and sophomore Cat Gariepy (Lorraine, Quebec). The coxswain is senior Carrie Champigny (Danvers, Mass.).
Drown led UMass to conference road wins, a 13-11 victory at St. Joseph's on April 23rd and a 15-14 triple-overtime win at LaSalle on April 25th. She netted five goals and tallied one assist in each game, including the game-winner in the LaSalle game. Drown also assisted on the game-winner in the victory over St. Joseph's. For her performance she was also tabbed with Honorable Mention National Player of the Week honors. Drown is currently tied for eighth all-time at UMass in single-season points with 56 and is tied for ninth all-time at UMass in single-season goals, with 39. Her 56 points lead the team this year, while her 39 goals are second on the team. She also leads the team in game-winning goals with two.
