AMHERST, Mass. - Seniors Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) and Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) were named to the second team 2003 IWLCA / US Lacrosse North All-Region. This is the second honor the two seniors have received after UMass' 11-8 season, as they were also Atlantic 10 All-Conference selections.
Kurtz was named the 2003 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year after helping the Minutewomen achieve the nation's 14th-best defense, allowing just 8.22 goals per game. Kurtz, a co-captain of the 2003 squad, was also selected to the A-10 All-Conference team.
"An unsung hero on defense, Kelli's stats do not reflect her as an athlete," said UMass Head Coach Carrie Bolduc. "Kelli has been our mark-up defender throughout this season often shutting down the opponent's leading scorer. Kelli proved to be a threat on attack as well, as she scored two key goals versus Richmond to garnish an overtime victory in the (A-10 Tournament) semifinals."
Accompanying Kurtz on the All-Region team is Emery. As the team's second leading scorer this season, Emery recorded 38 goals and eight assists for 46 points for the Minutewomen. An All-Conference selection, Emery was also named to the A-10 All-Tournament team after tallying six goals in the conference tournament. She finished her career ranked ninth in UMass' all-time charts with 88 career goals and 10th in career points with 108.
"Jada proved to be a consistent threat on attack and in transition throughout the season," said Bolduc. "It is nice to see that Jada has not only been recognized by her teammates and coaches but by other coaches within the region and conference. Jada is a standout athlete as she received All-Conference and All-Championship accolades this year as well."
