Rhodes Named Dinn Brothers Athlete of the Week

AMHERST, Mass.- Senior Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) has been named Dinn Brothers / UMass Athlete of the Week announced today. Rhodes is the second men's soccer player to win the award this year.

Rhodes, a back, guided the Minutemen to their first shutout victory of the year last Saturday, a 6-0 win over Hartford. Rhodes scored a goal and an assist in the victory, but more importantly guided UMass to a shutout. Rhodes was switched from a midfielder to a back and the results have been impressive. In the first five games, UMass allowed 14 goals. Since the switch, the defense has allowed only two goals in three games.

"Derek has made a huge sacrifice for the team in moving to the back," said Head Coach Sam Koch. "He has done a great job organizing the backs and directing the defense. It's no coincidence that we have played much better the last three games with him back there leading us."

Rhodes was named a preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection after scoring 13 points (3 g, 7 a) last season. He scored perhaps UMass' biggest goal in school history last season with a goal in the 21st minute in the 1-0, NCAA first-round win over Creighton. So far this year, Rhodes has five points (1 g, 3 a) and ranks tied for ninth on the UMass career assist list with 13.
