AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Ptah Myers' (Columbus, Ohio) goal in the 82nd minute gave UMass a 3-3 tie with Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 Conference soccer game between two of the top teams in the conference.
The tie moves UMass' record to 8-4-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Duquesne is now 8-1-4 overall and 3-0-2 in the Atlantic 10.
The Minutemen wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) took a cross from Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) and fired a shot top-shelf past the Duquesne goalie for a 1-0 lead just 54 seconds into the game. After the Dukes tied it up moments later on the first of David Gingrich's two goals, UMass regained the lead in the 34th minute as Deren scored his team-leading 13th goal with an assist from sophomore Chris Camerota (Norwell, Mass.). Deren won a battle for a loose ball and trickled a shot into the lower-right corner. However, Duquesne responded again just five minutes later on Gingrich's second goal to tie the game at two.
The Dukes then took a 3-2 lead in the 76th minute, before Myers' heroics tied the game. Myers' header went top-shelf off a direct kick from Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) to knot the score at three. The Minutemen had several chances to win the game in regulation, but Duquesne goalkeeper Terry McNelis made 10 saves, including two in the final five minutes of the second half and two in the second overtime. The Minutemen also played with an extra player after Gingrich received his second yellow card with just 38 seconds remaining in regulation. However, UMass wasn't able to capitalize in the extra sessions.
The Minutemen stay at home for a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday against St. Bonaventure.
