BALTIMORE, Md. - The fifth-ranked University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team received hat tricks from threeplayers en route to a 16-10 win over ECAC foe Maryland-Baltimore County this afternoon in Baltimore. With the win, UMass remains undefeated on the year at 8-0, and improves to 4-0 in the ECAC. UMBC falls to 4-3 on the year, and 2-3 in the league.
The Minutemen jumped out to a 6-1 after the first quarter behind two goals from junior Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.), and single tallies from Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.), Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.) and Alex Racioppi (Winchester, Mass.).
The Retreivers closed the gap to 6-3 on a goal by Justin Smith with just under 10 minutes to go in the half, but Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) scored an extra-man goal and Morley added another to restore the five-goal cushion for UMass at 8-3. The Minutemen held a 10-6 lead at intermission.
UMass extended its lead to 13-5 on a goal by Leveille with 12:10 remaining in the game, and held off a late UMBC rally to stay perfect at 8-0.
Little led the Minutemen with his career-high five goals and one assist, while Morley tallied four goals to go along with an assist. Leveille notched a hat trick as well with three goals and an assist. Kunkel, Racioppi, Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Dan Paccione (Amityville, N.Y.) each tallied once for UMass.
Senior Chris Campolettano (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) made 15 saves in the cage for the Minutemen, while Steve Cusa made 15 saves for UMBC.
UMass returns to action on Saturday, April 14, when it hosts Yale at 1:00 p.m. at Richard F. Garber Field.
