AMHERST, Mass. - Despite scoring five consecutive goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to trim a 7-1 lead to a mere goal at 7-6, the Massachusetts women's lacrosse team failed to overcome a slow start in a 12-9 loss to Duquesne University on Friday afternoon at Ruth J. Totman Field. The Minutewomen dropped to 2-8 overall with the loss, while the Dukes improved to 11-1.
Duquesne dominated the action in the first half and jumped out to a 7-1 advantage at halftime. Katie Harner, and Lauren Mincher scored two goals 23 seconds apart to stake the visitors to an early 2-0 lead before Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.) responded with a score that cut the Dukes lead in half. From there, Kristin Harner tacked on a pair of goals, while Katie Harner and Mincher each scored once to pad the Duquesne lead to six goals at the intermission.
The Minutewomen opened the second half with an offensive flurry to jump right back into the game. Ingraffea sandwiched her second and third goals around a marker from senior co-captain Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) to cut the Dukes lead to 7-4. Sophomore Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) followed with two straight goals before Duquesne answered with a goal from Meghan Hungate.
Naber responded with her second score of the contest just over a minute later to make it 8-7. However, Hungate netted her second goal to restore the two-goal lead at 9-7. Katie Harner then gave her team some breathing room with three straight goals for a 12-7 advantage. Sophomores Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.) and Lori Kain (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) added late tallies to close the 12-9 final. Kain's goal was the first of her career.
Senior co-captain Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) stopped nine shots for UMass in the game. Duquesne goalie P.J. Harrison denied three Minutewomen shots on the afternoon.
UMass returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. for an Atlantic 10 contest against St. Bonaventure at Totman Field.
