Women's Lacrosse Falls to Harvard, 9-8

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Harvard scored two goals with less than five minutes to go in the second half to earn a 9-8 season-opening victory over the University of Massachusetts in women's lacrosse action today at Jordan Field.
The Minutewomen jumped on the Crimson early as sophomore Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) scored off a feed from senior Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) just 10 seconds into the game. UMass extended its lead to 2-0 when freshman Miriam Godfrey (Lexington, Mass.) scored her first career goal with an assist from senior Kara DePaula (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).
Harvard tied the game 2-2 with a pair of free positions goals from Alli Harper and Erin Kutner before UMass regained the two-goal lead. Robinson netted her second of the game off a feed from freshman Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) with 5:36 remaining in the first half. Naber followed with a goal that was assisted by DePaula to put the Minutewomen ahead 5-3. Harvard cut the lead to 5-4 when Heather Hussey scored off a free position with just 15 seconds remaining in the half.
Harvard opened the second half with a goal from Katie Shaughnessy to tie the game before UMass responded with a goal from Naber that was assisted by Robinson. Harvard came back with a goal from Lauren Corkery that was assisted by Harper. Harvard took its first lead of the game, 6-5, when Harper scored with 12:29 remaining in the game.
The Minutewomen scored a little more than five minutes later when Zelinger netted her first career goal, but Harvard regained its lead when Jen Brooks converted off a feed from Hussey a little more than a minute later. UMass responded with two goals to take its last lead of the game, 8-7, with 10:12 remaining in the second half. Robinson scored the first of the two UMass goals with freshman Angela McMahon (Weston, Mass.) scoring the other.
Sophomore Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) made 10 saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, while Nora Guyer made three saves for the Crimson. The loss drops the Minutewomen to 0-1 on the season, while the victory improves Harvard to 1-0. UMass returns to action on Tuesday, March 13, when it travels to Penn State for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game.
