THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Minutewomen played three games on the week. UMass opened the week with a 7-6 win over UConn on Tuesday in Storrs, Conn. On Friday, the Minutewomen returned home but lost to No. 6 North Carolina 12-6. The Minutewomen then closed out the regular season with a 14-6 victory over La Salle on Sunday. The win earned UMass a share of the Atlantic 10 regular season title, finishing in a three-way tie with Temple and Virginia Tech.
PAVLICK LEADING THE WAY: Senior midfielder Stephanie Pavlick (Blue Bell, Pa.) has scored 18 goals in the past six games to move into the team lead in scoring. Pavlick netted four goals in UMass' loss to Virginia Tech and followed it up with another four-goal outburst versus St. Joseph's. She added a goal and an assist in the 5-3 win over Temple on April 21 followed by three-goal performances against UConn, North Carolina and La Salle. Pavlick has now recorded a career-high 30 goals and six assists for a team-leading 36 points. This is the second time in her four-year career that Pavlick has reached the 25-goal plateau. She also reached the feat during the 1998 season when she recorded 25 goals.
IT WAS A LONG TIME COMING: When UMass defeated Temple 5-3 on April 21, it marked the first time the Minutewomen had defeated the Owls since 1980, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Since losing the first game in the series Temple had compiled a 16-0-1 record versus UMass. The victory over Temple also marked the first-ever A-10 league loss suffered by the Owls in the regular season. Last year, Temple went 5-0 in league play and they entered the game with UMass sporting an identical 5-0 league mark.
FRESHMAN CONTRIBUTORS: The Minutewomen have gotten goal-scoring production out of this year's group of freshman. The first-year players have combined for 16 goals and three assists through 15 games. Leading the way are midfielders Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) and Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.), who have both scored five goals and an assist. Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.) has netted three goals and an assist, while Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) has scored a pair of goals. Eileen Downing (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) also has a goal.
A-10 TOURNAMENT: The 2000 Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse championship will be decided on Totman Field this weekend (May 6th and 7th). UMass will play host to the tournament which begins with semifinal games on Saturday, May 6, at noon and 2:30 p.m. The title game will be play on Sunday, May 7, at 1:00 p.m. and will be televised live by the Atlantic 10 Television Network. The second seeded Minutewomen will play third seeded Virginia Tech in the 2:30 p.m. semifinal on Saturday with the winner advancing to Sunday's 1:00 p.m. championship game.
DEJA VU: If this year's A-10 championship seedings look familiar, that's because these same four teams were in last year's tournament held in Philadelphia. The four teams were even seeded the same. Temple was No. 1 with UMass following at No. 2, Virginia Tech at No. 3 and Duquesne at No. 4. Temple defeated Duquesne in the first game and Virginia Tech defeated UMass in the other semifinal. The championship game ended with the No. 3 seeded Hokies defeating the top-seeded Owls.
HEAD COACH PHIL BARNES: Phil Barnes is currently in his first season at the helm of the Minutewomen lacrosse program. Barnes was named the sixth head coach in UMass' women's lacrosse history this past January. Prior to assuming the head coaching position, he was an assistant coach under Francesca McClellan for the past two years. Barnes came to UMass from Holy Cross where he was head coach of the Crusaders from 1996-97. He guided Holy Cross to a 5-9 record in his first season and was named Patriot League Coach of the Year. The five wins were the most for a Holy Cross team since 1992. Barnes also guided the New England II squad to the United States Women's Lacrosse Association National Championship in 1996.
