AMHERST, Mass. - Senior midfielder Stephanie Pavlick (Blue Bell, Pa) scored three goals and junior goaltender Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) made 22 saves including a game-saver during the closing seconds of regulation as the University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team defeated UConn 7-6 at Morrone Stadium.
The Huskies opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game, but Rebecca Minaker (Newton, Mass.) answered five minutes later. The teams then traded goals to up the score to 3-3, with both UMass goals scored by Pavlick to increase her team-leading total to 24 by the end of the game. Also chipping in was Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) and Melissa Miele (Drexel Hill, P.A.) who scored their 11th and 12th goals of the season.
Play was physical and dominated by defense until UMass added two goals with in a minute shortly before intermission to take a 5-3 halftime lead.
UConn opened up the scoring in the second half, but the Maroon and White responded with two more goals from Pavlick and Minaker. The remaining eight minutes of the game saw scoring opportunities turned down by goalkeepers on both sides.
UMass improves to 7-6 overall, while the loss drops UConn to 9-4.
The Minutewomen will return to action on Friday, April 28, when they host the Tar Heels of North Carolina.
