AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior attacker Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Stephanie Pavlick (Blue Bell, Pa.) each scored four goals as the University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team defeated St. Joseph's 18-8 at Totman Field.
The Minutewomen controlled the play from the opening faceoff and took a 1-0 lead on a Sara MacNabb (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) goal a minute into the game. Following a St. Joseph's score the Minutewomen netted two straight goals to take a 3-1 lead.The Hawks scored at the 15:41 mark to cut the UMass lead to 3-2 before the Minutewomen scored nine out of the final 10 goals of the half.
Senior Melissa Miele (Drexel Hill, Pa.) opened the Minutewomen run when she scored with 13:53 to go in the first half. Pavlick followed with her second and third goals of the game. Junior Denise Brey (Tabernacle, N.J.) scored on a free position to give UMass a 7-3 lead at the 8:43 mark. Junior Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.) scored a goal, and then Naber netted her second of the game to up the UMass lead to 9-3. Ingraffea scored two more goals and Pavlick netted her fourth to give UMass a 12-3 halftime lead.
Scoring goals for UMass in the second half were Naber (two), Miele, Rebecca Minaker (Newton, Mass.), Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) and Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.). Naber finished the game with four goals and two assists, while MacNabb finished with a goal and four assists. Bernadette Smith led the way for St. Joseph's with four goals.
UMass improves to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 with the win, while the loss drops St. Joseph's to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the A-10.
The Minutewomen will return to action on Friday, April 21, when they host A-10 frontrunner Temple in a 3:00 p.m. game on Totman Field.
