THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Minutewomen played only one game this past week losing to defending Atlantic 10 champion Virginia Tech at home on Friday, April 14. The loss dropped UMass to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the A-10. The Minutewomen are tied for second with Virginia Tech in the league standings.

WHAT'S NEXT: UMass returns to action Wednesday, April 19, when it hosts A-10 foe St. Joseph's in a 3:00 p.m. game at Ruth J. Totman Field. The Minutewomen follow it up with another important league game on Friday, April 21, when Temple visits Amherst for a 3:00 p.m. game at Totman.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS: St. Joseph's enters the game at 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the A-10. The Hawks lone league win came this past Saturday when they defeated St. Bonaventure 20-3. St. Joseph's enters this week's game having won two of its last three. They are led offensively by the scoring of junior attacker Bernadette Smith, who has netted a team-high 30 goals and added five assists. Freshman attackers Shannon Hungate (20g, 13a, 33pts.) and Brett Dymarczyk (23g, 5a, 28pts.) are both threats to score. The Hawks defense is anchored by goaltender Lauren Bradley, who has started all 11 games. Bradley has recorded a .456 save percentage while making 95 saves.

SCOUTING THE OWLS: Temple enters the game at 7-5 overall and 5-0 in the A-10. The Owls have won four of their last five, including an 18-6 win over Virginia Tech. Temple is led by Kelly Ruch, who has netted 46 goals and nine assists for 55 points. Patience Synnestvedt (21g, 7a, 28pts.) and Jen Jefferson (20 goals) have both been threats to score this season. The Owl defense is anchored by the goaltending of Iris Alvarado, who has started 11 of the Owls 12 games. Alvarado has recorded a .605 save percentage and an 8.20 goals against average.

ATLANTIC 10 SUCCESS: The Minutewomen got off to a fast start in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a pair of wins this past week. Through the first two league games UMass outscored its opponents 30-3 by virtue of its 19-2 win over St. Bonaventue and its 11-1 victory over Duquesne.

FRESHMAN CONTRIBUTORS: The Minutewomen have gotten goal-scoring production out of this year's group of freshman. The first-year players have combined for 12 goals and three assists through 10 games. Leading the way are midfielders Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) and Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.), who have both netted four goals and an assist. Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) has netted two goals, while Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.) has a goal and an assist and Eileen Downing (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) has netted a goal.

PAVLICK LEADING THE TEAM: Senior midfielder Stephanie Pavlick (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored a season-high four goals against Virginia Tech to take over the team lead in scoring. Pavlick entered the game with 12 goals and four assists on the season and in second place on the team in scoring. Her four goals in one game marked the second time this season a Minutewoman had netted four goals. Junior Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.) did it versus New Hampshire on March 30.

A-10 TOURNAMENT: The 2000 Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse championship will be decided on Totman Field May 6th and 7th. UMass will play host to the tournament which begins with semifinal games on Saturday, May 6, at noon and 2:30 p.m. The title game will be play on Sunday, May 7, at 1:00 p.m. and will be televised live by the Atlantic 10 Televsion Network.

HEAD COACH PHIL BARNES: Phil Barnes is currently in his first season at the helm of the Minutewomen lacrosse program. Barnes was named the sixth head coach in UMass' women's lacrosse history this past January. Prior to assuming the head coaching position, he was an assistant coach under Francesca McClellan for the past two years. Barnes came to UMass from Holy Cross where he was head coach of the Crusaders from 1996-97. He guided Holy Cross to a 5-9 record in his first season and was named Patriot League Coach of the Year. The five wins were the most for a Holy Cross team since 1992. Barnes also guided the New England II squad to the United States Women's Lacrosse Association National Championship in 1996.
