HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Kathleen McPike and Janet Walsh each scored three goals to lead Hofstra to a 9-7 victory over the University of Massachusetts in women's lacrosse action this afternoon. The loss drops the Minutewomen to 2-4 on the season, while Hofstra improves to 3-3 with the win.
McPike and Walsh each scored a goal to give the Flying Dutchwomen a 2-0 lead six minutes into the game. UMass responded with goals from seniors Stephanie Pavlick (Blue Bell, Pa.) and Melissa Miele (Drexel Hill, Pa.). Hofstra scored the next goal to go ahead 3-2. The Hofstra lead was again short lived as UMass countered when senior Rebecca Minaker (Newton, Mass.) scored to tie the game 3-3.
Hofstra took the lead for good by scoring the three of the final four goals of the half to go into the break leading 6-4. Junior Kara DePaula (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored the other Minutewomen goal in the first half.
Each team scored three times in the second half as Hofstra held onto its two-goal lead to win 9-7. Miele, Minaker and Pavlick all netted their second goal of the game in the second half. Minaker also added an assist.
Junior goaltender Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) made 15 saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, while Jackie Carroll made 13 saves for the Flying Dutchwomen.
UMass returns to action this Wednesday, April 5, when it hosts Dartmouth on Ruth J. Totman Field. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
