Hockey Defeats No. 9 Providence College

Providence, R.I. -- Senior Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 36 saves en route to a 3-1 defeat of ninth ranked Providence College in college hockey action tonight at Schneider Arena. With the win, the Minutemen have won five straight over the Friars.
UMass scored twice in the second period with senior R.J. Gates (Plainville, Conn.) scoring the game winner at 15:51 with assists from sophomore Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) and freshman Mike Warner (Waltham, Mass.) to give the Minutemen a 2-1 lead.
Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) opened the scoring for UMass at 10:46 of the second period with assists from junior Luke Duplessis (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.)
Warner scored a empty net goal with nine seconds left to give UMass a 3-1 lead. Senior Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) assisted on the goal.
Providence grabbed a 1-0 lead when Jon DiSalvatore scored at 10:23 of the opening period with assists from Marc Suderman and Peter Fregoe.
Helanen stopped all 18 shots in the second period and 10 in the third to hold Providence scoreless in the final 50 minutes. Boyd Ballard made 15 saves for the Friars.
UMass is now 4-10-2 overall and 4-3-0 in Hockey East, while the Friars now stand at 8-4-3 overall and 5-3-1 in Hockey East.
UMass returns to action next weekend when they travel to Maine, Thursday, Dec. 14. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
