Hockey Falls To Maine, 3-2

ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine junior defenseman Eric Turgeon netted his first career goal on a two-on-one with just over five minutes remaining in the third period to lift Maine to a 3-2 Hockey East victory over the University of Massachusetts in college hockey action tonight at Alfond Arena.
Turgeon's game-winning goal came on just the Black Bears second shot of the third period. The Minutemen are now 0-15-0 all-time in Orono, Maine.
Maine opened the first period scoring when Robert Liscak netted a power play goal just over two minutes into the game. The Minutemen responded with a power play goal less than two minutes later. Junior Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) scored with assists going to sophomores Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) and Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.).
The Black Bears regained the lead when Matthias Trattnig scored with a wrist shot off the crossbar at the 8:31 mark of the first period. Again UMass responded, this time it was freshman Mike Warner (Waltham, Mass.) who scored from the slot when he fired home a rebound. Junior Justin Shaw (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) assisted on the goal.
Senior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 24 saves in the net for UMass, while Matt Yeats made 23 saves for Maine.
The loss drops the Minutemen to 4-11-2 overall and 4-4-0 in Hockey East, while the victory improves Maine to 7-6-4 overall and 4-3-2 in Hockey East.
The Minutemen return to action Saturday, Dec. 30, when they host Brown in a 5:00 p.m. game at the Mullins Center. Following the game, there will be some holiday fun as fans are encouraged to skate with the Minuteman players and coaches.
