BRONX, N.Y. -- Freshman Obie Gravely (Richmond, Va.) scored two goals as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team (11-5-2, 7-1-1 A-10) defeated Fordham (6-10-0, 3-6-0 A-10), 3-0, this afternoon in Atlantic 10 soccer action at Fordham's Edwards' Parade. Junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) recorded his seventh shutout of the season bringing him one shy of tying the UMass single-season shutout record of eight. With the win UMass earns its second consecutive trip to the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Kingston, R.I., on Nov. 3-5.
Junior Fred Kinateder (Waukesha, Wis.) gave UMass the early lead when he scored from an assist by sophomore Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) at the 2:09 mark.
Gravely scored his first goal of the game off an assist by freshman Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) at the 75:53 mark as the goalie came out of the net to the right and Gravely shot it into the left side of the net. Gravely scored exactly two minutes later when he scored on a chip shot from 10 yards out with an assist by freshman Matt Laughlin (Selah, Wash.).
O'Quinn earned the shutout with two saves. He is now alone in second place on the UMass single-season shutouts chart with seven, behind Jon Gruber's eight in 1991.
