PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Sophomore forward Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 21 seconds left in regulation as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team (12-5-2, 8-1-1 A-10) defeated La Salle (2-13-0, 1-9-0 A-10), 2-1, this afternoon in Atlantic 10 soccer action at McCarthy Stadium. With the win, UMass earns a share of the Atlantic 10 regular season title as Dayton tied George Washington 2-2, to also finish with a 8-1-1 record.

This is UMass' first title since winning it for the first time in 1994. UMass will be the No. 2 seed in the four-team Atlantic 10 Tournament at Kingston, R.I., on Nov. 3-5, by virtue of falling to the Flyers, 3-1 on Oct. 20. On Friday, UMass will take on tournament host Rhode Island (13-5-1, 8-2-0 A-10) at 7:30 p.m., while Dayton will face No. 4 seed George Washington (9-5-3, 6-3-1 A-10) at 5:30 p.m. The championship game will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2:00 p.m. The Minutemen defeated Rhode Island, 1-0, in overtime earlier this season.

After a scoreless first half, La Salle's Nick Zegestowsky scored at the 64:19 mark off an assist from John Topper. UMass answered back at the 79:21 mark when senior Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.) scored with an assist by sophomore John Lytton (Madison, Miss.) to tie the game. Deren's game-winner was shot into the left corner of the net off Lytton's second assist of the game.

Junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made two saves for UMass, while La Salle goalie Josh Schoppe stopped six shots.
