AMHERST, Mass. - Donovan Nunweiler made 42 saves to lead Acadia University to a 4-1 win over the University of Massachusetts in exhibition college hockey action Friday night.

UMass got on the scoreboard first when senior Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) one-timed a feed from junior Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) for the score midway through the first period. Acadia answered to tie the game with a goal by Brian O?Neill early in the second frame. O?Neill collected rebound off a Darryl Moxam shot for that score. Acadia jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the third period when Mike Sim scored 3:31 into the frame. The Axemen sealed the game with a Todd Row power play goal and an Eric Hunter goal 24 seconds apart late in the period.

Nunweiler was at his best in the first period turning aside 19 shots, while UMass goaltenders Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) and Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) combined to make 34 saves in the game. Helanen stopped 25 while allowing just one goal through the first 40 minutes, while Johnson stopped nine and allowed three goals in the final 20:00.

UMass opens its season on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Colgate University. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
