Massachusetts Baseball Falls To Ohio In Game One, 5-3

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to Ohio in a close first game, 5-3, at Earl Lorden Field on Friday afternoon.
UMass moved to 14-24 overall, and 10-15 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ohio sits 9-36 overall and 6-19 in the league.
Seven Minutemen had one hit, which included Anthony Tirado's third triple and a double from Gavin O'Brien. Tirado, Ty Fox and Braden Sullivan all recorded a run, while Vance Bonior, O'Brien and Matt Travisano tallied one RBI apiece.
The Minutemen took an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame. With two outs, Fox singled up the middle with a 3-2 count. O'Brien then doubled down the left field line, aiding Fox across home plate.
Ohio tied the game up at 1-1 in the second with an RBI single.
In the fifth, Massachusetts took back the lead. After one out, Tirado recorded his third triple of the season. Bonior singled through the left side, as Tirado touched home plate to give UMass the 2-1 advantage.
The Bobcats knotted up the game once again at two apiece in the sixth with a solo home run. Ohio broke the tie in the eighth with a two-run single up the middle to lead 4-2.
In the top of the top of the ninth, the Bobcats tacked on another run to lead, 5-2.
UMass scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from Travisano to make it a 5-3 game, but Ohio was able to collect its final two outs to win.
Callen Powers (4-4) had the loss for Massachusetts, allowing four runs on six hits, walking two and dealing six strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work.
Dillon Masters (2-2) earned the win, giving up only one run, two hits, four walks and striking out two.
