Baseball Drops Beanpot Opener To #23 Boston College, 11-1

The Minutemen will play Northeastern or Harvard in the Beanpot Consolation game on Tuesday, April 14.

BRIGHTON, Mass. - University of Massachusetts baseball dropped the Beanpot Opener to No. 23-ranked Boston College, 11-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Harrington Athletics Village.

Massachusetts will face the either Northeastern or Harvard in the Beanpot Consolation game on Tuesday, April 14, hosted by Boston College. A time will be determined at a later date.

UMass moved to 6-18 overall on the season, as Boston College improved to 23-11 overall on the year.

Braden Sullivan went 2-for-3 on the day with a double. Five Minutemen followed with one hit apiece, which included a double from Gavin O'Brien. O'Brien had the lone run for UMass, while Will Briggs tallied an RBI.

Massachusetts got on the board first to take the 1-0 lead in the top of the first frame. After one out, O'Brien doubled down the left field line to get on base. Ty Fox followed with a single to left center field, before Briggs hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored O'Brien from third.
 
Boston College tied it up, 1-1, in the bottom half of the first on an RBI single. The Eagles took the lead after scoring on a wild pitch to make it a 2-1 game. A two-run triple pushed BC's lead to 4-1, before another wild pitch allowed the Eagles to score and make it a 5-1 contest.

An RBI single in the second extended Boston College's lead to 6-1. The Eagles pulled ahead in the fifth, putting up three runs to lead 9-1. A two-run single up the middle walked off the 11-1 victory for BC in the bottom of the eighth.

Lorcan Lee (0-2) took the loss for Massachusetts after giving up five runs on three hits, three walks and strikeouts in one inning.

Jacob Burnham (2-2) had the win for Boston College allowing no runs, three hits, no walks and dealing three strikeouts in four innings of work.

Massachusetts travels to Ypsilanti, Michigan, to take on Eastern Michigan for a three-game MACtion series on Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+, with Saturday's game starting at 3 p.m. on Eagles All-Access. The series finale will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday on Eagles All-Access.
