Baseball Falls To Central Connecticut State, 6-4

Gavin O’Brien registered his eighth home run of the season.
UMass moved to 12-20 overall and 8-13 in the Mid-American Conference, while Central Connecticut State improved to 13-17 on the season.
Gavin O'Brien went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, marking his eighth of the year, while adding a team-high two RBI and a run. Anthony Tirado, Ty Fox and Marc Willi followed with one hit each. Vance Bonior and Willi tallied one RBI apiece, as Tirado, Fox and Jack Beverly also scored a run.
Central Connecticut State led early, 1-0, with a lead off solo home run, before adding another run with an RBI single to pull ahead 2-0 in the opening frame.
Massachusetts got on the board in the second to make it a 2-1 contest. After Beverly reached first on an error before advancing to second, Willi singled down the right field line to drive home Beverly from second.
The Blue Devils extended its lead to 3-1 in the third with a lead off homer over the left field hedges. Central Connecticut State tacked on another run to take a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
UMass put up two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to get back within one at 4-3. With two outs, Tirado was walked, before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error but the Blue Devils' catcher. O'Brien knocked one over the left center field fence for his eighth home run of the season, bringing home Tirado.
The Minutemen tied up the game at 4-4 in the seventh. Fox led off with a single up the middle, before stealing second and advancing to third on an error. Bonior then hit a sacrifice fly as Fox slid into home.
Central Connecticut State added another run on a balk in the eighth to reclaim the lead at 5-4. The Blue Devils tacked on a run on an RBI single in the top of the ninth to push ahead 6-4, and come away with the win.
Dylan Terwilliger (1-1) had the loss for Massachusetts, giving up only one run on one hit, walking one and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work.
Nate Dudeck (1-0) received the win for CCSU, allowing three runs on two hits, two walks and striking out four in four complete innings. Richie Kerstetter earned the save, allowing no runs, no hits, walking one and striking out one in 1.2 innings tossed.
Massachusetts hosts Stonehill on Wednesday, April 22, at 3 p.m. on ESPN+ at Earl Lorden Field.
