Back-To-Back Walk Offs Aid Baseball To Series Sweep Over Bowling Green

AMHERST, Mass. – Back-to-back walk-offs helped the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a series sweep over Bowling Green in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Massachusetts walked off a 6-5 victory in game one, before walking off a 2-1 triumph in the 11th inning of game two.
Ryan Kolben and Marc Willi were the walk-off heroes. Kolben was walked with the bases-loaded in the first game of the afternoon, while Willi hit an RBI single to score Ty Fox in the second game.
UMass improved to 12-19 overall and 8-13 in the Mid-American Conference, while Bowling Green moved to 15-23 overall and 8-13 in the league.
Massachusetts prepares for two midweek contests, welcoming Central Connecticut State on Tuesday, April 21 at 3 p.m. on ESPN+. The Minutemen then host Stonehill on Wednesday, April 22, at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
Game 1
Massachusetts 6, Bowling Green 5 (9 inn.)
Jack Beverly led the Minutemen with two hits, including a double. Fox, Braden Sullivan, Vance Bonior and Kolben all had one hit each, which included Bonior's second home run of the year and Kolben's fourth of the season. Bonior and Kolben tallied two RBI apiece as Beverly added one. Six Minutemen scored runs, as Sullivan scored the game-winning run on Kolben's walk-off walk.
After a scoreless opening frame, Bowling Green scored three runs in the second to take the early 3-0 lead. The Falcons added another run in the fourth with an RBI single to pull ahead 4-0.
Massachusetts got on the board in the fifth, cutting its deficit in half at 4-2. Reece McCarthy led off with a walk, before Bonior hit the ball deep over left center field fence for his second home run of the season.
Bowling Green tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to push ahead, 5-2.
Kolben got the Minutemen back within one run in the eighth to make it a 5-4 contest. Beverly started off the inning with a double to deep center field. With one out, Kolben hit a two-run homer, marking his fourth of the year over the center field hedges.
UMass held off the Falcons in the top of the ninth to keep it a close game. In the bottom half of the ninth, Fox led off with a bunt single. Sullivan then singled to left field with one out, before Bonior was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Beverly singled to third base with Fox crossing the plate to tie up the game at 5-5. With two outs, Kolben stepped up to the plate and saw four straight balls to walk-off a 6-5 victory with walk as Sullivan came home to make room.
Ben Thomason (2-0) earned the win for Massachusetts, allowing only one run on three hits, walking two and striking out one in four innings of work.
Titus Lotz (1-3) had the loss for Bowling Green, giving up two runs, three hits, a walk and striking out one in 0.2 innings.
Game 2
Massachusetts 2, Bowling Green 1 (11 inn.)
Anthony Tirado was 3-for-5 on the day with a double, followed by Gavin O'Brien, Fox, Willi, Beverly and Kolben all with one hit. Fox and Kolben also had doubles on the day. Tirado and Fox scored the two runs in the bottom of the 11th for UMass, while Fox and Willi had one RBI each.
Both the UMass and Bowling Green defenses held strong through nine innings in a pitcher's duel that left the game scoreless and forced extra innings.
In the top of the 11th, Bowling Green scored on an RBI double to take the 1-0 lead.
